Marcus L. v Stephen Davis

  • A while back we had the 'best SC hs player ever' post. I had a question. Why didn't anyone say Marcus? I never saw him in HS, but he must have been something. Has any of you seen S Davis, Marcus, Demetris Sommers, and Derek Watson all play in HS. Or Marcus and one or two of the others? How does Marcus compare(high school only) to these guys? I was just curious, and thought about this recently.

  • I saw Stephen Davis play growing up, played against D. Summers, and my coach was Marcus's HC at Byrnes...and saw him play....

    Davis was the most dominant at the high school level.....he was big, faster than any of the other guys you mentioned (beat Tim Montgomery to win the state 100M), and played in at the time one of the best high school regions in the nation.

    Summers had the most raw talent probably but thats all it ever really was.

    Lattimore had the best work ethic and was the strongest. He gained alot of his yards after contact and if it came down to running out the clock in the 4th Q or 4th and goal from 1 to win the game...I would go with Lattimore.

    I am not sure marcus was stronger than davis coming out of high school. Davis was the most physically ready high school player i ever saw. My junior year in high school i was in the stands watching my friends try to tackle him. The stats were something like 4 carries for 160 yds and 3 td. Only played first quarter. I was standing down on the fence around the field when he played gaffney that year. He ran a td right in front of us and it felt like a horse running by. He was unreal combination of size, strength, and speed.

  • I think sometimes there is a tendancy to remember past players as being better than they were. Davis was undoubtedly a great one, Lattimore certainly deserves to be mentioned in the same sentence. I think sometimes we forget how good he was.

    Not going to say he is the best, but another name I'll throw out there is Mustafa Greene from Irmo. Injuries really slowed down his career, but had he stayed healthy, he is a guy who easily could have had 6500-7500 career yards

    Freshman: 700 yards with about 100 carries
    Sophomore: Almost 2000 yards in his only full season as a starter
    Junior: 1300 yards, but this came in only about 7 full games
    Senior: Again, 1300 yards in 7 games.

    I really wish I had his official numbers so I could break it down a little bit more. But if you look at his last two seasons and project that over a 13 or 14 games season, you are looking at 2000-2500 yards per year. Greene would get about 150-200 yards in almost every game. I remember one time in the rain he had 180 and 3 TDs on like 8 carries. Is he the greatest? No. But he was dominant in every game he was healthy enough to play in, despite being the focal point for defenses. He put up simillar number to Lattimore during the same years.

    This is a pretty good analysis. Davis may have been stronger, but Lattimore keeps his shoulders square and rumbles forward better than anyone.

    If Meat had Lattimore's work ethic he would have won a heisman and top 10 pick. #waste
