Martin in Pittsburgh

  • This is the first of two April evaluation periods for NCAA coaches. Next weekend will also be an open evaluation period. There is a huge AAU event in Pittsburgh this weekend and I am sure coach Martin is there looking at some 2013 prospects.

  • Could be working on a visit with Sheldon Jeter too. Not sure how close Beaver Falls is to Pittsburgh but might be on the agenda.

Martin has already had his in-home visit with Jeter. If I am not mistaken, the rule is the same for football and basketball that the head coach gets only one in-home visit per prospect.

  • IMO Martin is in Pittsburg for a variety of reasons.
    1. scout 2013 prospects
    2. see PG/2G Willie Moore in an AAU game and
    3. maybe try & get some feedback from Jeter.

Since Hall may or may not qualify, Moore is insuracne. He's a player in his own rite but we cannot have all our eggs in the Hall @ 2G basket and then have him not qualify. If we get Moore and Hall does qualify, all the better. Hall could play SF and would probably be the best option on the team there. Moore would be a front runner at the 2G and add great depth to PG.

    In the best case scenario
SF: Hall / Jackson / Slawson
    2G: Moore / Leonard / Williams / Richardson
PG: Phillip / Williams / Ellington / Smith

    PF: Kacinas (sp) / Haughton
    C: Geathers / Chatcevitch (sp)

deep inside I see a couple of more guys leaving next yr. Jackson is a sr.
If they do not fit Martin's style of play, I could see any combination of Smith, Williams, Richardson & even Leonard
transferring out after this yr. That would mean up to 5 schollie available for Martin's 2nd class. We know Jackson's schollie opens up. I would expect between 2 & 4 others to open up as well. Martin will be honest with the kids on the squad and tell them if they are going to play or not. Martin likes physical players. The guys who would not seem to fit would be
    - Richardson
    - Williams
    - Smith (he's not a flyweight but doesn't have SEC talent).
we will see as the next season begins and we know who's on the team and who fits in well va. doesn't.

Slawson will be starting at PF, that's one of the few guarantees I could make about next years line up.

From what I hear, our coaches like Williams. I don't think we will sign Moore. If Jeter wants to come to USC, I expect we would take him. There is a good chance that at least one more of Coach Horn's recruits will not be on the team next year.
