Michael Roth/ golf clubs **Info Update**

  • He tweeted that since he was a full time pitcher, he should get his golf game in shape. Somebody named @PrestonBaynes said he would buy him a set for all he's done for USC. I said I'd pitch in.... Bet we could do this is a hurry.

  • believe it is technically illegal until he officially signs

    @therealmacklin

    Macklin

  • His eligibility has run out.I would assume you could

  • The title is supposed to be GOLF clubs, not gold clubs
    .
I'm told that he's done with the school so it should be legal. I will get a decision on this before we complete this deal.

  • Nice gesture on your part, but I hve a feeling Roth wouldn't want anyone buying him any clubs. Just a gut feeling.

Would be my feeling too but he's been trolling on twitter the last two days for stuff like this. Said he got a free dinner yesterday for the first time, floated the golf club thing, talked about getting some clothing from some baseball clothing company and then talked about a potential glove endorsement. I don't blame him one bit. He's spent the last four years making alot of money for alot of people and none of those people were him. If he plays in the minors for a few years and then has to get a "real" job then his window is closing real fast to cash in.

  • If he signs a major league contract, shouldn't he be able to afford his own?

    CockedLocked

  • Well, I had the clubs thing rolling, but ended it per Michael's request. He said he was leaving in a couple of days but would be back in the fall.
    .
I wouldn't call what he was doing "trolling." There are a lot of people, me included, that don't mind showing our appreciation to student athletes AFTER their career is over.
    .
The problem is, the buzz will be over and raising the funds will be almost impossible once he signs a contract, so I guess the window for doing this is officially closed.

    Mike,

I love it when you post. And it has nothing to do with what you say.

  • Roy Williams and Kansas got in trouble a few years back for giving graduating seniors gifts. I would think if you're a booster, this is a problem. He's going to get a signing bonus and will likely be able to get clubs for free through an agent.

  • Just a quick fyi. I work in compliance (not at USC) and I have dealt with this exact scenario. It is still an NCAA violation. Don't shoot messenger and I don't agree with the rule but it is a violation. Justification is that if you had a bunch of boosters lined up to provide extra benefits after eligibility is exhausted, coaches could still use that as a recruiting tool. Coach says "Look, I can't give you any money but if you come here I will make sure you are well compensated after you graduate. " Again, I don't agree, that's just their interpretation.

  • I don't blame him one bit. He's spent the last four years making alot of money for alot of people and none of those people were him.

    Lets see...according to USC website:
    Tuition: $10,168 in-state (resident)
    Housing: $5,440 (resident/nonresident)
    Meals: $2,752 (resident/nonresident)
    Books: $950 (average)
That's about $19k a year, not to mention access to personal trainers, coaches, medical care, and much much more. But we'll go with the lowball figure of $19k a year.
That means he made almost 80k for himself over the 4 years. I'd say that's a lot of money for a college student.

If you saw my post from earlier this morning, you'll see that Michael sent me a note and thanked me but told me not to continue. Ok, end of story.....not quite. I found out that what I was about to do is a violation of NCAA rules.
    .
And this is an FYI for anybody else like me that is just an enthusiastic fan with good intentions. I got a letter from the USC Compliance today and they explained to me the situation as follows:
    ..
    .
    .

    Staff Interpretation

Providing gifts or cash to student-athletes who have exhausted eligibility

    Date Published: August 21, 1987
    Item Ref: b

    Interpretation:

A representative of a member institution's athletics interests asked whether he could provide cash or gifts to a student-athlete whose eligibility was exhausted five years ago, but who just graduated from the institution. The staff concluded that while the representative could employ the former student-athlete after graduation or could be involved in another type of legitimate business arrangement with him, it would not be permissible for the representative to give the student-athlete cash or other gifts.

    Educational Column

Extra benefits to student-athletes after eligibility is exhausted

    Date Published: March 15, 1989

In accordance with the provisions of Bylaw 16.02.3 [formerly NCAA Constitution 3-1-(g)-(5)], an extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or representative of the institution's athletics interests to provide a student-athlete or the student-athlete's relative or friend a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation. Receipt of a benefit by a student-athlete or the relatives or friends is not a violation of NCAA legislation if it is demonstrated that the same benefit is generally available to the institution's students or their relatives or friends.

The NCAA Council recently confirmed an interpretation of Bylaw 16.02.3 that a representative of a member institution could employ a former student-athlete after graduation and the student-athlete could be involved in a legitimate business arrangement with the representative; however, it would not be permissible for the representative to provide the student-athlete cash or other gifts subsequent to the completion of the student-athlete's eligibility. Such extra benefits would be considered impermissible recruiting inducements.

No.. somehow, they got wind of it and contacted me by email. I'm guessing, somebody forwarded one of my post to Compliance for whatever reason they thought they needed. I don't have a problem with it and even put that int he first post on this thread.
    .
Does anybody remember the Ron Stephenson deal? He was the Pro/Manager at a golf course in Columbia and let baseball players play for free. He's a great guy. Big fan of baseball and wouldn't do anything to intentionally hurt the program, but he did, and go "disassociated" from the program.
    .
I'm not gonna be "That" guy.

He may have been disassociated but he was still there in the same seats at The Sarge doing the K signs after all of that. Haven't seen him at The Ray though.
