Mike and Mike talking Frank Martin....

  • Very flattering on his coaching abilities but they are stirring up a little controversy regarding his comments on CBS this weekend on players taking money. Wonder if this in any way impacts his hiring

  • That was a really interesting discussion. I missed it on CBS, but apparently Martin said that, when he was a high school coach, he'd send money to his former players who were in college and couldn't get it any other way.

I doubt Hyman is hiring based off Mike and Mike.

That is considered a prior relationship. Shouldn't be anything wrong with that.

Kstate suspended a player in the tourney based on exactly the same thing.

Honestly, I was shocked by his comments and was surprised it didn't become a board discussion ( I guess we were more focused on the USC portion of his comments). He wasn't an NCAA employee so he didn't break any rules, but it was more his lack of respect for the rules. He put college players eligibility at risk by sending them cash. He seems to take the tact that if he has a clean conscience, then the rules don't matter.

That's why Martin was so upset with his AD for suspending the player. He felt that there was a legitimate prior relationship between his player and the man who gave him money.

    Spurrier...I appreciate him plenty

I think it was an AAU coach that sent the money fwiw. not sure if that matters as to prior relationship status

  • Mike & Mike also called him "The scariest man on earth" and said that his scowl is more terrifying than Gruden's rant

  • He feels like he was helping out student athletes who probably didn't have families capable of sending any money to college. He was not giving the money to entice them to go to a particular school. So in that way, he does have a clean conscience. He'll need to be very clear on the rules and I'm certain Hyman has or will address as necessary.

  • His comments were a bit disturbing to me. Martin in his heart of hearts does not think it was wrong for the AAU coach to send the KState player money but he refused to say who the players were that he coached in AAU ball and gave money to and these players are out of school and hopefully in the NBA. Seems to be kind of flip flopping on this. My main concern is his general attitude about it and I question whether or not he would report such a thing to the AD or NCAA if is happened at SC. I feel like KState was hoping for an Auburn type situation where the NCAA immediately re-instated the player but they did not. KState did what they thought was right and so I do not fault KState.

This is my only concern with Martin. The AAU world is sketchy, at best, and getting that type of talent from those types of relationships can be problematic. We, as a program about to be on some form of probation with the NCAA, need to be careful about whom we hire and how things are done.

  • He was probably upset with the KSU AD because he felt it was no problem. After all, he did it for two (2) of his former players. Maybe he didn't mention their names because he now realizes it could be problematic. I think once he knows he cannot do that he will adjust. I still think this is a good hire.
