Missouri game... Thoughts?

  • What do you guys think about the Missouri game? I think it could be a tough game, especially if James Franklin has healed up well. Do I think we are the more talented team? Absolutely. But, they are no pushover. I think we win, but it's going to be tight. I say 28-24 type game.

  • I honestly have no idea, because I haven't really followed them before this move to the SEC. All I know is, we owe them for the bowl game. Sidney and Blake were torching them in the 1st half. Unstoppable, then it was like we just stopped playing. I couldn't eat until the next day after that one. Got rid of the t-shirt I'd bought to commemorate the bowl match-up, and never wore it again. My feeling is we'll give them a proper "welcome" to where the big boys play. Hope so, anyway.

  • Yeah it took a long time to get that taste out of my mouth from that bowl game with them. That was our fault though in the second half. Still don't know what went wrong.

  • They've got a long trip over here too. May have a little factor on the game as well.

It was the pick 6. We had a 1st and goal around the 4 or 5 or something up 21-0 and then they had a 99 pick 6. Completely changed the game.

  • I don't think Mizzou and A&M understand the grind of the SEC season. Injuries mount and the constant pounding of the linemen and the rushing attacks is what separates the SEC from the rest of the country. They are a good program and the Big 12 was/is a good league. However, it's very different preparing for the offensive attacks they are used to and what they are about to see.

Am glad we have them at home, Randy Cross on XM 91 noted earlier today that the two new members of our conference need to improve on defense - last year A&M ranked 59th and Mizzou ranked 61st - his words were that with numbers like that they would be a "speed bump" in the SEC, thought that was a bit harsh; gives me some additional confidence w/ the home field advantage. Also an outside chance they are a little beat up from UGA game, I know that is a stretch, we'll see. Last time I saw Mizzou play, they thumped us pretty good in Shreveport - yeah I know our team is a complete 180 from what it was then, but still a bitter memory.

Hopefully by the Mizzou game our O tackles and WR's have settled in and the offense have settled in to somewhat of a rhythm - hope the defensive secondary has gelled as well.

  • the same thing that has happened the last 1000 times when a finesse offense goes up against the top dline in the country, they die a hard miserable death.

I usually don't go around calling broadcasters idiots, but I'll call Randy Cross one. He was a regular on CBS College Sports network last fall. He predicted the Gamecocks would get stomped by Clemson. Later, he said Nebraska would steamroll us.

My take on the Carolina-Mizzou game in September is that we will rely on a ball control offense, featuring a heavy dose of #21, to keep James Franklin on the sidelines and shorten the game.

  • I think they're lucky to have us early, BUT we are their first road game. And we also play them after they play UGA and AZ St. I know AZ St isn't going to be that good, but its better than SE Mizz St. They'll probably be a little banged up when they get here and maybe even a little jet-lagged of sort.

But James Franklin has never dealt with the likes of Clowney/Taylor/Quarles and Holloman coming off the edge is going to be nasty too (Jarvis Jones-ish IMO). They don't have a strudy enough defense I don't think to stop our running attack, which will lead to deep balls over the top when they do stack the box. I think it gets ugly, but the score won't really show it. I see a Capital One-esque game. 31-13 with us running away not trying to score quickly. I also think a new receiver (Roland/Smith/Brent??) will have a breakout game against their secondary and it being 4 weeks into the season.

  • Poor man's Arkansas, imo. They will be good practice for us for when we actually play the Hogs.

Exactly. Not much can be said.

  • Hard to say about Mizzou. I feel we will just basically be superior to them on the LOS and I agree with another poster, similar to the Clemson game and/or Nebraska bowl game. They get UGA in week 2 at home so we should get a pretty good idea of how they match up with a quality SEC OL/DL.

  • I only watched Mizzou in the bowl game last year against UNC....but the tarholes had open recievers streaking down the field on almost every play. I think their offense may cause some challenges but defensively they did not impress me.

IMO they are a Vandy level team right now...which is no slouch...but in a few years recruiting could be tough to handle.

  • All I know is that will be their first road SEC game as members of the conference and I hope our fans pack the Brice and get real REAL loud to give them a rude welcome. Stomping them into submission would be nice too. I want their team and fans leaving glad they're getting a piece of the SEC $ because they just got beat like they should have been paid for it.

  • Mizzou is a Kanetuck style speed bump. Gamecocks are not the the same talent level they were in the Dreadful bowl years. This team is poised for a run and no SEC newbie/wanabe is going to be ready for a Marcus [About 1,030,000 results (0.23 seconds) google search] Latti-nightmare.

  • Judging from this, seems our fanbase has little respect for Missouri. I think some more research into their program for the last several years is warranted here.

  • They have always had a pretty good offense. I think Clowney and Co had better be on, which they will. It seems like all of our games are always close, so I am sure it will be.

So, are you saying you have researched them? Feel free to share thoughts. It's a new day at Carolina. A day where our players respect all, yet fear none. That's the stance I'm going to take as well. If we get the chance, we're going to knock their pee pees in the dirt, though, and I'm all for it. If we can't handle Missouri, then the Athlon, Steele's, etc. pre-season mags, David Pollacks of the world are right about us. I don't think they are.

Yes, I've been paying attention to Missouri, as I do all college football teams. Their body of work is impressive and for a poster to compare them to Vanderbilt is insane. I was merely suggesting that others do a little research on their program and performance for the last 5 or 6 years or so before giving them no credit.

I will tell you that Georgia better wear their big boy pants when the go to Mizzou for that early season game, especially if Franklin is healthy. We better be ready as well.

  • Yesterday had a Gamecock old timer remind me of the '79 Bowl and the one we blew in '05.

They will be formidable, but think we take em this time

Not gonna say "payback" as I hopefully learned my jinx lesson with Auburn last year. sick

Well, unlike with the Auburn game, Garcia has been removed from the equation.

Fair enough. Thanks for the response and info. Like I said, I haven't had much reason to follow them until now, but I do know they had one of the top rated players in the country when we played them last, and should have beaten them soundly. We have a much better team from top to bottom now, and have them at home, so I feel confident we'll be ok. Again, I hope so at least. game-cocks
