My thoughts on the SEC - Big 12 championship game and expansion

  • 1) The Big 12, which was on the verge of extintion for most ot the past two years out hustled the passive ACC and wrapped up the best possible non-playoff bowl game that will net both conferences millions for each school.

    2) Unless an ACC team can go undefeated, the playoff will generally feature a team from the Big 10, the Big 12, the Pac 12 and the SEC. The new bowl will wrap up the 2nd best teams in the SEC and Big 12 while the Rose Bowl will wrap up the Pac 12 and Big 10 2nd place teams. This virtually assures the ACC champion will play the Big East Champion (Go UConn) in a crappy Orange bowl that nobody will care about or watch. In fact, the ACC will be without any marquee matchups in the bowls. Without a high profile Bowl game, the ACC will wither on the vine and its revenue will greatly trail that of the 4 major conferences.

    3) If Clemson does not get into one of the big 4 conferences, our financial advantage over Clemson will grow well beyond the $22 million annual gulf that exists now. A new SEC network will only grow that gap even more.

    4) Timing is everything and we are extremely lucky to be in the SEC. We made an awful decision to get out of the ACC and got screwed when the tigers did not follow. And if the SEC had expanded in the 70s or 80s, Clemson was a better positioned program and may have gotten in over us. When the SEC did expand, we were not one of the top choices but other candidates rejected the overtures and the SEC needed a 12th team to have a conference championship game. Despite being woefully unprepared, we were fortunate to get into the conference. Today, we see how fortunate, we are safely embedded in one of the 4 power conferences while the team that screwed us 40 years ago sits on the outside, begging to get in. Again, timing is everything and its not in the tigers favor. With TV rights and markets driving the conference realignments, a out of the way, small school with a marginal TV market is not an attractive option for the one conference that they desperately want to be in.

It took 40 years and I had my doubts, but we are now in the right place at the right time while our rivals are staring at the abyss.

  • This is a great post Gamecock Pride....spot on.
That was a long 40 years. Most of my lifetime of following the Gamecocks have been wrapped up in those poor decisions that have led us to where we are now. I could not have said it better. It feels great to finally be at the right place, at the right time!!!

40 years in the wilderness was painful. Would never want to go through all that again. But we are postitioned to make those years worth it to get where we are and where we're going.

Let me add....it's a great time to have an AD like Eric Hyman and a President like Harris Pastides!!
We still need a few BOT's replaced....but we're getting there!
