***NCAA Release on Sharrif Floyd***

  • Florida football student-athlete Sharrif Floyd must sit out two games, repay benefits

University of Florida football student-athlete Sharrif Floyd must sit out two games and arrange repayment of approximately $2,700 to charity before he is eligible to compete, according to a decision today by the NCAA student-athlete reinstatement staff. Floyd did not compete Sept. 3 and must sit out the university’s next game on Saturday (Sept. 10).

The university declared Floyd ineligible for violations of NCAA preferential treatment rules, including receiving $2,500 cash over several months from an individual not associated with the university. Floyd used the money for living expenses, transportation and other expenses. In addition, he received impermissible benefits prior to enrollment, including transportation and lodging related to unofficial visits to several institutions. University of Florida was not one of these schools.

Based on the mitigating circumstances in the case, the withholding condition was reduced from a potential four games to two. In its decision, the reinstatement staff cited the totality of Floyd’s circumstances, including his personal hardship that led to the impermissible benefits being provided to the student-athlete by someone other than a legal guardian or family member.

“We examine each situation carefully and consider all elements related to a student-athlete’s individual circumstances and the violation,” said Kevin Lennon, vice president of academic and membership affairs. “This gives us the flexibility to tailor the conditions of reinstatement that take into account all details and are in the best interest of the involved student-athlete.”

During the student-athlete reinstatement process, the staff considers a number of factors including guidelines established by the Division I NCAA Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement for the type of violations and value of benefits, if a significant competitive advantage was gained, the student-athlete’s responsibility for the violations and any mitigating circumstances presented by the school, among other factors.

When a NCAA rules violation has occurred, the university must declare the student-athlete ineligible and may request the student-athlete’s eligibility be reinstated. The NCAA staff reviews each student-athlete’s reinstatement request individually based on its own merits and set of specific facts.

The university can appeal any student-athlete reinstatement decision to the Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement, an independent panel comprised of representatives from NCAA member colleges, university and athletic conferences who are not directly affiliated with the university. This committee can reduce or remove the condition, but it cannot increase the staff-imposed conditions. If appealed, the student-athlete remains ineligible until the conclusion of the appeals process.

  • If that is the rule, then Byrd should be eligible now because his dad is VP of this organization. Last I checked, a father is a family member.

    This.

I thought somebody said UGA and Clemson had players that went through this foundation at one point or another. When will they be announcing suspensions for said players?

I was also thinking about the Penn St player that was in question. Penn State ended up playing him despite the concerns the NCAA expressed. So, does Penn State now how to forfeit that game?

Ha - this is funny. So let's say a kid gets 2 games. Obviously the "committee" process takes longer than 2 weeks. So this says an appeal can occur, but who in their right mind would appeal a punishment when the ineligible period due to the appeal is LONGER than the period due to the penalty?

    Idiots the lot of them.

Well so the kid doesn't have to pay 2700 dollars! As he didn't have a home for a while in HS I have to assume he's not rolling around in dough like taters with uncles.

  • Apparently hosting an interview Q/A Friday at 3pm. Submit questions and see what Mr. Lennon has to say for himself and his joke of an organization.

Yes, but he's suspended for 2, 3, 4, 5 games, however long it takes that Committee to make it's ruling.

And he'll have to repay the $2700 dollars either way, that's not in doubt. Plus note that he doesn't have to pay $2700, he has to come up with a payment plan. He can spread it over however long will be allowed.

  • So what I am reading here is that Floyd took impermissible benefits by being provided lodging and transportation to visit colleges by a non-profit organization designed to help high school athletes whose families don't have the money to provide such things and even though it had no bearing or intentional influence on his decision (seeing as how he picked a school that none of these things were provided at), he now has to pay back $2,700 they couldn't come up with in the first place AND he has to sit out games on top of that. Oh, and the NCAA reviewed it and took into account his family's financial situation so this was the "lenient" penalty? That is absolutely bogus.

This is one instance where they should truly be ashamed of themselves as an organization. I know we as fans get caught up in what we think should be punishments for violations and that we don't like some of the rule changes they come up with and things like that but this is beyond the pale IMO. They are punishing this kid for requiring what is basically a charity to help him get to possible colleges where he has the opportunity to receive an education he may not have had access to thanks to his hard work in a sport. Then they say, "well, we realize you couldn't pay for this yourself and that your financial situation is very tough...SO you need to pay that whole amount back anyway and sit out too." It's not like these families are proud about having to have someone else pay their way and have the world know they have financial problems.

    Really sad IMO.

  • This makes ZERO SENSE. How in the world is Jacory Harris able to play this week? How was Cam Newton reinstated after an hour of being suspended?

What the F is wrong with these people?
