Name one player who must step up for 2012 season....

  • I'm going with Brandon Shell, LT is ultimately the second most important position on an offense behind QB. Not necessarily as important in a Zone Read offense as we run compared to your traditional Pro-Style offense but we need Shell more than ever to come out and dominate in the Spring and leave no doubt who our Left Tackle will be for the next 3-4 years.

Having the best defensive end duo in the SEC will go a long way in developing Shell into the All-SEC tackle that we need him to become trough repitions in practice and a strong off season of hard work. If our offensive line can continue to develope under Elliot we could really become a powerhouse running team in 2012.

So I'm going with Shell for my player who needs to step up in 2012 , interested who all you guys think . Tony JC would like to hear your thoughts as well.

Love the topic and its hard to disagree with Shell. I could still see him moved to RT and have Matulis play the left just due to experience.

I think Chaz Sutton needs to step up as much as any other player. Having three DE's in Taylor, Ingram, and Clowney last year kept constant pressure in the backfield. I think Sutton has that ability to be the third guy and cause opposing coordinators to work their gameplans around knowing they are going to have at least one beast in Garnet and Black in their backfield at all times.

  • I'm hoping Damiere Byrd will. Gonna need his speed as a receiver.

  • I can't decide between Victor Hampton, and Jadeveon Clowney. Clowney will be the main man on third down now, and that is new to him. Victor is the most talented corner we've had since Dunta, maybe even more so. He will have to stay focused

Ally will beat the crap out of Uga.

  • I actually believe Victor Hampton. We have really really got to have that one shutdown corner and with Akeem Auguste coming off foot problems then he's the man. Plus his maturity level needs to be there. I know he hasn't had any major problems since coming to SC, but he has a history and he just needs to keep his head on straight and his focus on his future. I think the V. Hampton has the ability to become a #1 shutdown corner in the NFL one day.

  • Tony does not agree with me, but I think Hampton is at least the most talented corner we have had in 10 yrs. He absolutely blankets guys, they cannot separate from him. I really like him as a kick returner, if he can hold on to it. He is sooooo explosive! In pads, the fastest guys on the team are 1. Byrd
    2. Hampton
    3. Ace/Bruce tied here I think.
But Hampton is the quickest, best cutting ability, hips, acceleration, etc. He is at the position that you want all of those qualities, either reciever or corner.

  • Jerideau... Or whoever wins the other tackle spot. UGA, Lsu, and UF are going to try and run it down our throats...the latter two because of their QB options. If we stop the run during that stretch, we survive and go to Atlanta.

    daddyspur21

  • Ace Sanders. As poor as our production was last year, AJ is gone and now Ace will be the go-to guy. We are gonna need him in a big way!

  • Agree with earlier poster....great discussion question!

I'm going to go with Kelcy Quarles. Kelcy is a high motor guy. I have a feeling he can play at 6-4 295 in the middle.
We lose a huge piece of our puzzle with Ingram leaving. Obviously, different kind of players. But to maximize Clowney, Taylor and the secondary...we need Kelcy to have a big year in the middle.

    Jerideau gets my vote.

  • Whoever wins the kicking job.

    Zenupe13

  • I'll go with Holloman stepping in a the spur position. He has the biggest shoes to fill and will be in a position to make the biggest impact on defense. Most of the other guys listed (outside of Shell) just need to keep doing what they did last year.

The rug really tied the room together, did it not?

  • I have to say any WR. This is our biggest question mark going into the season. We have to have some threats to keep the defense from stacking 8 and 9 in the box to stop Lattimore.

There have been mentions in the post for Sander or Byrd. I would agree with those or even throwing in Roland, though I hate to depend that much on a true freshman. Anyway, I think we need a couple of players in the receiving corp need to step up to help the running game.

    this.

we felt the loss of Ladi last year, as the interior of our line was vunerable against the run. I'm worried with Travian now leaving also. Unless it is up to one of the middle linebackers (Shaq, Cooper) to be the plug in the middle.

  • Our new ST coach. We have GOT to start pinning people deeper.

    Tyler Hull

  • Kicker/Punter
    Jerideau
    Hampton
    Byrd

  • I try to stay away from stating freshman and redshirt freshamn step it up. However, I agree with many who have listed Byron J, as it's his third year with the program and we need someone to step up beside KQ. I'm going to go with Ronald Patrick, though he has done well in the action he has seen so far, as we will be replacing our RG. It's time for Ace Sanders, DeAngelo Smith, and Lamar Scruggs to make some noise. From a leadership stand point we know that Marcus is a presence but hopefully Shaw will grow more into the role and guys like TJ Johnson, Justice Cunningham and Ace Sanders can be vocal leaders on O. On D it's more of cocern because we graduated many of those leaders, you hope guys like Holloman, Taylor, Wilson, Swearinger, and Auguste can be the guys on D. Yes oh my goodness please give us a kicker who can kick the ball more than ten yards.

  • Rodney Paulk. I expect him to only get better, this and next year as his knees fully heal.

    pleasework

  • Whoever takes over the Spur. It is going to be difficult for someone to play that position as well as AA did.

    Garnet101

  • Connor Shaw would be my choice. His development as a passer will determine if we can go from being a good, efficient offense to a powerful, devastating offense.

  • Rodney Paulk was great his freshman season back in 82. He just has not been the same since his knee went out in 94.

    DUCESHARPE

  • Definitely Shell at RT on offense and Jerideau on defense! It all starts up front...

    JWD843

  • I have to agree with Garnet 101. I actually think it's Devonte Holloman. I know that sounds crazy but I believe he'll be the one to fill Antonio's shoes.

    SC4Life01

  • I'll just go wioth "ALL THE ABOVE".
