New BB Coach Scenairo...what would you do?

  • So let me ask this way just to see what everyone thinks:

Would any of the top guys (pretty girls) who many are saying are not coming here come here for 3M per year with 5 year deal?

If yes is that better or same than Marshall at 2M per year for 6-8 years?

If we could get Brad Stevens of Shaka Smart for 3M for 5 years would you take that or go with Marshall at 2M for 8 years?

Would you pay more than 3M to get say a Rick Pitino or Billy Donovan? We have 12M in reserves right?

15K in attendance every night and you can afford 3M?

I am not for or against Marshall and glad my name is not Hyman so I dont have to choose but think if we get our best then we have to look outside of box which is hopefully what the above scenairo allows so tell us what you think....?

  • Tommy Amaker is not worth 1m. He should not even be put in the same sentence as Stephens. This was his second Tourney appearance, in his career.
Stephens would be a take at 3m per. You would think he would do better than Marshall.
Yes for Donovan. Probably for Petino.

Its hard to say if paying someone who we think is better for a mil more than Marshall would be better. There is a pretty good chance that Marshall would get us to the tourney in two yrs, so who knows? Please edit your post and take Amaker out of there, or you are going to get ripped.

Yes for Donovan and Stephens. You should have put Bill Self in there.

  • There is no amount of money in the world that will get us Brad Stevens, Billy Donovan, Bill Self or Rick Pitino. The fact that many of our fans can't spell Pitino or Stevens and mention a bum like Tommy Amaker in the same sentence with them should disqualify us right there. But that's not why they aren't interested.

Even if there a more nationally prominent coach than Marshall out there who is interested, say Tubby or Stallings, they aren't coming for a five year contract. Tom Crean got a guaranteed ten year deal at Indiana because it was such a mess. Indiana!

Well, maybe Tubby would if he fears he's running out of rope at Minnesota. But as we learned with Dave Odom and Jim Carlen, hiring coaches who are about to lose their current job seldom ends well.

BTW, I know Tubby's career is far above the two clowns I just mentioned, but the principle holds.

  • If they would come I would pay $4 million a year for Stevens or Self. I would for Pitino if I knew he would coach for more than a few years because he's getting close to retirement. But the reality is they aren't, so we look to guys like Marshall and Stallings. We won't get a quality coach here for less than $2 million IMO so that should be our starting point.

Gregg Marshall is worth the money if you ask me. I will happily purchase season tickets if he's hired. Conversely if we hire Amaker or Capel I will promptly shred my renewal letter from the Gamecock Club.

  • Bill Self??? Billy Donovan??? Are u serious? Yeah, i'm sure they're thinking of leaving one of the top jobs in the country to try and build a program at a place where if everything goes perfectly I still won't be anywhere near the level of the school I'm currently coaching. Yeah, sounds logical

  • 3 to 4 million a year puts us on a totally different planet with coaching candidates then we are talking about. Problem I see with this figure is Hyman would not pull the trigger on this move.....I also have my doubts as to whether he will be offering this type of a financial package when the time is right to replace SOS

  • I know Brad Stevens. He is an awesome dude. I don't want him down here. I don't think he is a good fit and I think he is in a much better position for success at Butler. He is probably the man IU or Purdue will call on if and when they make a coaching change.

  • Call Frank Martin. nm

  • you are vastly over rating basket ball in the state of sc. you will not get any top notch coach to leave a top notch program to come here even if you offer 5 mil
