New NFL rules on contact to head and neck

  • Just like most knee-jerk assertions on rules and regulations these newly enforced contact rules by the NFL designed to protect defenseless players will become tempered in time. This rule is important and will affect all levels of football (college, high school and Pop Warner) but if the league office remains steadfast on this approach then football as we know it will be relegated to touch football. Ray Anderson, the NFL's VP of Football Ops, appears to state the league will not retract under no circumstances and they will not differentiate between an egregious hit versus an accidental hit to the head or neck. This could become interesting. The fans will probably display their disapproval with their wallets if the game becomes gravely altered due to defenders thinking too much before making a hit. We will see.

  • There is no new rule. They are just going to enforce the existing rule more stringently. All Anderson said on Mike & Mike was they were going to enforce the rule on "defenseless" players, i.e., without the ball, whether on on offense or on defense/during a return. They are trying to eliminate the "bingo" hits guys are going for instead of actually tackling, as well as the obvious leading with the helmet/launching hits like Merriwether of the Pats had on Todd Heap this weekend.

i wonder if they'll flag offensive players that lower their head and try to run over someone when a defende is in front of them? That creates helmet to helmet just as much, and the defender doesn't have the ball. It's all about restricting defensive players and it's a shame.

Anderson said they were going to enforce it on ALL defenseless players.

If you read the original post what you wrote is exactly what I said. Rules enforcement, albeit at first this will more than likely be ridiculous.
