As a founding member of The University Club I can say no to this. Ginn ruined this when he bought it and turned it Into Cobblestone Park. He could have cared less about Carolina and its golf course. He kicked out members like myself because living 2 hours away and on a state membership he wanted everyone to pay the full local $350 price. As a founding member I asked if I could still play my 3-4 rounds per year and just pay the going rate and was given a authoritative FU. So FU Ginn. The original an was awesome and wish the original owner never died of a brain tumor. I agree to put something closer. Our team is improving and deserves a course closer for all gamecocks! Fans, coaches, and athletes

As a member of the golf team from 05 - 09 I can tell you the people who ran the place for Ginn didn't like us out there.... I agree with you though...that place now has no look or feel of a "university" course

honestly. i wish the golf team would be able to move and call Columbia Country Club it's home...

  • This all sounds fine and dandy. But you put a true "university" course near campus the golf teams would have to fight with faculty, staff & students to get time on the greens. Schools that have them " on campus" try to recruit against us with the fact that we play off site. Yet fail to tell recruits it's open to all employees etc.

''fair is not getting them same as everybody else, fair is getting what you need to succeed."

How about a new softball stadium? Maybe a tennis facility? Where would those rank on your profitability scale?

    Like softball.

  • i know for a fact that Georgia, Clemson, and others use this when recruiting against us by telling kids and their parents that they have to drive 30 minutes to play golf if they go to USC. The practice area helped big but we still NEED a golf course near campus.

  • The Walker Course at Clemson is not run by Clemson employees. The management of the course is outsourced to another company. I suspect the land is leased and the university makes money off the lease payments. They have bundled that operation with a conference center and the Marten Inn, which is why they are semi successful. Duke University has a big fancy hotel next to their golf course also, which I know helps them. Clemson does benefit from the abundance of labor from all of their turf / ag students.

If I was building one near USC, I would take a hard look at building a small, minimalist clubhouse ( way too much overhead) and combining it with a sure fire food / beverage operation. I have to believe the cost of land anywhere near USC would be prohibitive. We are talking 110+ acres if you want a driving range. And construction costs go up quick if there is "lots" of earth moving. So the property needs to be semi ready for golf.

  • Just a few more thoughts : any public or semi private golf course is VERY dependent on rounds played for revenue. There is no quaint "saving the course" for the golf teams. In fact, the golf teams will probably have to pay for access. The operators will want faculty, staff, other students to use the facility. Operating costs are just too high to have it any other way. Not to mention stuff like property taxes.

Unless you are a facility like Sage Valley (or Augusta National) or even a place like Greenville CC or Forest Lake, golf is a tough business. Those places have a core group of members / investors that don't mind paying for the upkeep.

Now if someone could talk Hootie Johnson and Lou Holtz into bankrolling the place ( and the ongoing maintenance costs), you might have something to think about.

How does the Walker Course at Clemson compare in your opinion. How could they possibly turn a profit? Wouldn't a university have an acceptable amount it would "lose" in order to operate the facility? I would think it would def not be a revenue producer but any revenue generated would supplement its cost. I'm asking i really have no idea. I know that as a Private entity it will never happen but thought the university could have the budget for it.

As a golf course superintendent for 13 years and having been involved in the construction of three different courses, I can tell you the cost to build a new course with practice facility and clubhouse would exceed the $15 million mark. Cost would depend greatly on location, soil type, acreage, and expectations. Maintenance cost of the course typically run $5 - $8,000 per acre so looking at your average 120 acres of maintained turf that would be a maintence cost of $600,000 to $960,000, again, dependent upon expectations. Overall operating budget would be in the neighborhood of 2 to 2.5 million per year. And as far as Clemson goes, remember they have a huge Turfgrass program with alot of "free" labor. Their costs are very limited. I am sure they also get help from the govt with agricultural grants.

It doesn't hurt that they've got a few guys on tour to promote Clemson either.
