No offense to our coaching staff and conditioning crew....

  • There is no telling what "supplements" players are taking during the months before the combine, and I don't blame them one laying it all on the line to get that huge pay day.

No idea if AJ supplements, but you can be sure a large number of prospects do.

Where did you read that SG's mechanics have improved?

  • I'm with the OP on this one. Especially on Garcia since his was more mechanic based rather than Alshon which is just an effort thing IMO. SG was here for pretty much 5 years and if he has, in fact, changed his motion so drastically then I am concerned why they couldn't change it up here. There was plenty of time to do so.

yeah, having him faster, quicker and more agile, would of sucked

you should bring up the topic with spurrier, brother.

sos says alshon is better when bigger.

he lost weight to address dumb nfl concerns and shave some 40 time off. After he gets paid he'll get back to his optimum playing weight, which is where he stayed while at USC.

Mr. Nice guy, are you saying SOS and crew tried to change Garcia's mechanics and he just wasn't receptive to it because he wanted to drink beer? I am curious as to what mechanics were changed and if our staff noticed it or did not.

It was reported Antonio Allen has also knocked a tenth off of his 40 time.

The answers of nothing but football 24/7 may explain some of this.

I can't speak to the specifics as to what SOS tried to change with Garcia, but I'd be willing to bet he did make some changes. With every QB that has come through here we always hear that the new guy(currently McEvoy) has some flaw in his natural throwing motion. With McEvoy its that he has a big windup. I seem to recall something similar with Garcia, but dont quote me on that. Though I think its safe to say that SOS and company made tweaks to Garcia's motion. And one thing we all know about basic mechanics is Garcia constantly threw off of his back foot and off balance. Something SOS always criticized him about. I do not know what his new coach has done to change, or tweak his throwing motion. But Im not so sure its the only reason why he looked so well at pro day, according to some. He is in the best shape of his life, and he is the most focused he has ever been about football. Had he shown those traits while at USC, who knows how the story would have unfolded.

With Alshon's hands, body control, leaping ability, I think it can only benefit him to be faster in the NFL. He will be going against bigger cornerbacks consistently and I don't think he can rely on all the things he did in college. I could be wrong on this one and I guess we'll find out if he keeps the weight off. We've never seen him play at that weight but logic seems to say he would only improve as his speed and agility would have to improve by being lighter, quicker and faster. He wouldn't lose the 3 things that make him special (hangs, body control, leaping ability) so I would think by losing weight that would only help.

The meals are prepared in the Dodie, however players are only required to "swipe" their card once per day. Outside of that workouts 6 am, class, meetings, practice, now do I want to eat a salad or stop by *enter fast food chain here* before I start homework. My thing is we have a nutritionist, why can't he/she place a bigger emphasis on nutrition? Take Holloman for example he carries 240 well, but imagine him at 220 225. It's not like they would have to starve to death bc the amount of calories they burn is enormous. The nutritionist wouldn't be restricting them to say just salads, but instead say lets not get two double quarter pounders from Mcdonalds instead order two grilled chicken sandwiches. Just my 2 cents.

I don't believe everyone really understands the difference between having good meals prepared for the athletes at a school and having a nutritionist design a plan specifically for each individual. The school nutritionist can't tailor a plan each of a couple hundred athletes. That is completely unrealistic.

The difference is huge. I can't stress enough how much diet factors in to someone's shape. It's as important as working out for many folks.

He also has millions of reasons to make a concerted effort over 3-4 months to get in the best shape of his life.

Nearly every player is in better shape for the combine than they are during school. Almost every single one gets in better shape. It's not a conicncidence.

Yup. I believe a diet is more important, considerably more. Good post

  • I do think the OP raises a legit opportunity for the coaches. They probably could do a little better job of selling pro football to the guys who can actually make it there. By selling pro football I mean letting the players know this is what NFL scouts will be looking at, and they'll look at your entire career from HS to college before deciding if thy want to pay you big bucks for a high draft pick.

Character is what you do when no one else is looking.

The coaches, nutritionist, strength coaches academic folks, etc. already do this. Trust me. However if you know how to make young people listen all the time go help them out.

  • Good point... please post any information that could help young people and or kids listen all the time and make good decisions at all times.
