  • I think only Ric Flair could maybe get the job over Tanner.

  • If Ray wants the job, then I would be very happy for him to have it. I think he would do fine.

Steve, I'd rather have an AD who's served as an AD - not an assistant, not an associate, not a go-between but the person in charge. I certainly think that Tanner should be given due consideration along with everyone else who applies but President Pastides shouldn't hire Tanner simply because he's been a superior baseball coach. Similarly, when it comes time to replace Coach Spurrier, I hope our AD will not be driven by sentimentality and hire an assistant off the staff if there are better choices elsewhere.

I think Pastides should consider all candidates before making a decision. This is too important a decision not to.

Head baseball coach Ray Tanner has to be considered one of the top candidates to be the next athletic director and it certainly appears he wants the job.

I didn't "downvote" this post because that has other implications but if Tanner wants the job then I hope he gets it. I'm going on record, though, as saying that I hope he doesn't want it.

And Big A, many of us would rather have an AD who has ALREADY garnered the respect and admiration of the entire althletic dept based on his ability to lead, administer and manage multiple priorities, fund raise, be a great ambassador for our university, AND bleeds garnet and black. Learning the specifics of the job is the easy part; garnering respect and leading is the hard part. Tanner's already accomplished that.

That's your preference. I'd prefer someone who's performed the job before.

Guess the dye was cast in February that Hyman would leave.

    It's "...the DIE was cast..."

    Die (noun) Plural dice
A small cube marked on each face with from one to six spots and used usually in pairs in various games and in gambling by being shaken and thrown to come to rest at random on a flat surface —often used figuratively in expressions concerning chance or the irrevocability of a course of action "the die was cast"

What is a shame about that episode is that King Dixon is a great person who truly loves Carolina.

He had recently retired from the Marine Corps and was a bank executive in his hometown of Laurens when then-President James Holderman (who later was twice sent to federal prison on separate fraud convictions) saw an opportunity to use Dixon's friendship with BOT member Herbert Adams to his personal advantage. Holderman's support on the board was crumbling, and Adams was a swing vote.

Dixon, who had no experience in athletic administration, proved to be in over his head. Meanwhile , Holderman's attempt to co-opt Adams failed.

Where Carolina has really come a long way is in our last three presidents; John Palms, Andrew Sorenson and Harris Pastides have all been good leaders of high integrity.

  • I think you only have to look to Holbrook for signs that Tanner is far and away the leading candidate.
Holbrook took essentially a lateral move to come which on it's face is not a smart move for someone looking for an HC job. That is not to mention he has all the credentials to move up.Holbrook has had several feelers if not concrete offers from big time programs yet he has always brushed them off.
    Why? Seems obvious.

  • It's depressing to think that Ray may have coached his last game here. This is terrible news, IMO.

And my fear is that Ray starts to miss coaching 3-4 years down the road and we don't have an opening.

  • i think tanner should get the job

i think holbrook is ready to step up

and if both of those 2 guys don't get a promotion; it could have negative consequences for us down the line

  • I wonder if Ray told Lopez at the end of the game that it might have been his last. That would explain the hug.
