OT: Break In

  • My house was broken into yesterday. Does anyone have any helpful tips on dealing with the police and insurance company?

Outside of calling them both.... no. Sorry that happened. Sucks. People are crazy.

you shouldn't have a problem. just be sure to get the police report and the case number.

i tell you someting that happened to me. one time my house was broken into twice by the same people. actually the storage room and garage. they stole several rod and reels both times. the cops got the first ones back from a pawn shop but not the second batch. long story short, i had to buy my own rod and reels back from the pawn shop smh. at least they were a good deal. and some had already been sold.

  • Where do you live? There have been a lot of break ins in irmo recently. I know they hit TCBY, and Tripps dry cleaners, and I heard they hit Cicis, and a gas station near there all early yesterday morning.

  • If your insurance is through a reputable company, you won't have a problem. Just submit the documents they request and wait for the check.

I lived right outside of Five Points while at USC and we were robbed on Christmas night. They took everything except our computers. They cleaned out the fridge, freezer, took pillow cases, the covers off the couch cushions, change jars, everything. One roommate had renters insurance, the rest of us were up the creek.

  • Some insurance companies will pay the claim and then cancel your insurance or really jack the premiums up so be careful. If you are interested in installing security system in your home, thats what I do. I own a security company and will be glad to help you out if you decide thats an avenue you want to explore.

  • You might walk through the pawn shops in the surrounding area over the next couple of weeks and see if any of your things show up. Most pawn dealers cooperate with the police. If you spot your things let the police know. You may be able to recover things. For the future keep a list of serial numbers from things like laptops, ipads, ipods, cameras and those things that are likely to be taken. If things of value don't have serials, you can apply your own number (maybe the last four of your social). Its called an owner applied number (OAN) and can be entered into the NCIC file for traceability. For jewelry take photos of your valuables That can be an invaluable tool in identifying items later. Should you arrive at your home or business and suspect a breakin do not enter. Call the police and let them do a house search first. The suspect may still be there or you may disturb potential evidence. You might organize a meeting and have the crime prevention officer to come and give you further tips. Just a few quick thoughts.

  • The police will ask you to estimate the value of items stolen or damaged. Don't underestimate. Your insurance company may use it against you.

  • I'd make sure I had a detailed list of everything, and I mean EVERYTHING missing. Insurance company is going to scrutinize every bit of your claim.

if a regular person goes to the pawn shop, he has to be able to go into the back. if the crooks pawned it instead of sold it our right, the stuff will not be out front.

  • Few years back my house was broken into and Nation wide was pretty easy to deal with. They sent someone out twice and I had a phone interview too. They gave me money for everything including new french doors bc of a very small crack around the dead bolt.

    Who are you dealing with?

  • The only the the police are good for is a case number and documentation for the insurance claim. They told me to check all the pawn shops in the area (in NE Cola it's way too many). I did get over $10k back from my insurance company. These guys took everything electronic. Even my thumb drive for work. They took all of my shoes, caps, and jackets. Then before they left they pushed my couch in front of the door so I couldn't get in. Had to go through the back.
