OT: Care to comment on Chromebook

  • I dont want a full-size notebook but would like to have the smaller scale. Smartphone is too small and I dont use my Iphone very often due to the size BUT seems to me the Chromebook is sort of a "rightsize" notebook. The only drawback may be a positive and that is the Google operating system which requires some amount of conversion back into standard programs. Comments please?

  • If not for business travel, why not just a tab? My N7 is attached to me. If for business travel then I think chrome book is very appealing.

  • What do you plan on doing with a new device. Be specific.

  • For Web:
    General surfing
    Bank
    Weather
    Gamecock stuff
    Financial sites

Correspondence, currently Word and Email but a modest amount
No business use at this point

Mostly for convenience at home but a small amount of Websurfing away from home on wifi or Verizon 4G portable

Sounds like you need a tablet. Ipad has the market cornered, but I would check to see what financial sites you frequent use. Ipad will not load flash stuff and several sites I need for work run exclusively on it, so I had to sale. Have a galaxy tab 2 now. It's okay, but no where near as good of tablet as the S3 is a phone.

  • To me it actually sounds like he doesn't need a tablet.
Seems like a chromebook would suit your needs well. Everything you said is web based save for using microsoft word. But Google Docs (google drive) can cover your word processing very effectively.

  • I talked to a factory rep at BB the other day and she said I could import my yahoo/att home page and apparently pull word docs into the "dot" (not sure dot is right) but by asking a few questions really treat it pretty much as a Windows parallel. There is some difference between some of the keyboards I understand but nothing of consequence....any keyboard is better for me than using the glass.
    Sounds good to me too

I dont think the tablet has usb and HTML ports and that seems to be a big plus for this low-tek

  • Google just came out with the Chromebook Pixel. It's pretty awesome.

    Fomerly known as Garnet&BlackAttack.

  • I might be overlooking something, but only chrome book I see that is 4G is @1200.00? Seems a bit steep. I see a 3g model that is about 250-300. I'm not sure I would buy something that is already outdated though and there is a noticeable difference between 3g and 4G speeds. Do people still use aircards/mobile hotspots? (or whatever they were called) I prefer to use a tablet with aluminum keyboard/case for work on the go and travel. Different strokes for different folks. Guess that's the reason they offer so many different options.

  • Thanks
the 4 G is a Verizon Mobile hotspot that I use as IP and for my needs I havent taken it out of the house, just dont need it. I really jumped the shark and gave up on getting an IP after the Uverse mess. I'll go back to some sort of package when the contracts run out on the I phone and hot spot. Just dont have any sort of sophisticated needs at all....dont download music or movies so I just need simplicity at a reasonable cost
    Edit
I think the Pixel is well above my needs and doesnt have the standard keyboard as do the current crop of products....that's another "want".
