OT: Charleston eatery worth checking out!

  • While we are on sullivans/iop, if you are looking for great seafood hit up Long Island Cafe.

Place is in a rundown shopping center, and has a pretty manic vibe, but the grub there is incredible.

Like your palate and thinking, FOE.

The mockingbird at Mozzo, and Turkey Cran at Stacks are the truth. Pretty sure Stack's is opening for dinner now as well....although the sphere might be a little drab for dinner

Definitely open for dinner now. Might be wrong, but I don't think it's the same building as the lunch Stack's. It looks to be 2 doors down...haven't been yet so can't speak to the sphere. Dank little menu though.

Oh I can agree with that. I'll eat at TM, but only because I'd rather drive the 5 minutes there than drive the 15 mins downtown and then have to deal with parking. Lot more spacious/quicker than Poe's.

One dissapointment is Juanita's on Coleman. The downtown location is literally night and day compared to the one on our side. They just don't even compare. It was a good place to go for a quick bite.

Better sphere than DT. Worse food.
Gotta go Coleman Public House if you're looking for a decent bite and a heady beer in that little stretch.

CPH very underrated for "bar food '. Asian ribs are redonk.

Another food miss: Triangle on Coleman. Good bar, weak food. I have yet to get the correct temp, or really even close, on a burger there.

  • I didn't go to Triangle for the food when i was living in Charleston. It was simply a sunday brunch place with bottomless mimosas and good, ummmmmm, views.

Also, I am saddened to read DB"s on JI is no longer in business. However, and this goes along the lines of the thread topic, Mondos in the same shopping senter off Camp Rd has amazing italian food for very, very cheap.

Edit: I thought you were referring to the Triangle in West Ashley

Triangle hit or miss for me. Food sucks. The POPO sits in the parking lot after 9pm Wednesday-Saturday night and have made a DUI arrest every night in the last 30 days.
I don't drink and drive but it is something to heed for those who might think they are ok to drive after 4 drinks. They are watching the side of the bar. I refuse to go there at this point.

CPH good..some talent in there on Friday nights.

That's madness re: Triangle. I've never seen the police out there, but will definitely take notice.

Santis. Just down the street where meeting and east bay intersect. Best Mexican in town.

The wait staff at santis leaves a lot to be desired.

Degams. Husk is rated the best restaurant in the United States. We were trying to keep this to the off the map type places. But great establishment obviously.

by whom, exactly? i remember when southern home named Amen Street the best new restaurant in the south for its opening year... but best restaurant in the nation flat out?

  • Bon Apetit, Best New Restaurant.

    bygeorge1980

  • Not quite sure, but its a pretty established food and wine magazine.

I've been to Husk a couple times, and haven't been that impressed.

My favorite spots are al-di-la (sp?) or trattoria lucca (little pricy but amazing food especially on Monday - family style night) for my italian, Home Team for BBQ (got great wraps too), Osaka for sushi, Mozzo or Village Bakery for a sandy, Juanitas for my mexican pizza, zia for my tacos. If I'm eating seafood, Hank's is pretty affordable or the wreck or sewee cafe.

All of the restaurants downtown are great, but I think Fig may be the best of the bunch.

    By Bon Appetit...there isn't a higher honer.
    Best in the US.

Amen Street is great...insane raw bar and apps..but there is just no comparison. Not in the same league.

To each his own Eddie but Husk is pretty impossible to beat by anything I have ever been to (at least now)

Gordon Ramsey just ate there 2 weeks ago. They are going to feature one of Brock's dishes on TV for a special.

Right now it is 10 days to get a reservation.

I like Fig as well. The Wreck I think is terrible. SeeWee big fan.

Al-Di-La has great food, very charming. Best BBQ is Moose's in GC, or JB's on Johns Island. Home Team Q is good and the have great sides, but it can be really fatty/greasy, and is almost already sauced. The taste should be in the meat, sauce on the side! Osaka has great sushi, and Sakura by Home Team is pretty good as well, plus they deliver. Ted's Butcher Block and Bull Street Gourmet have great sandwiches downtown. Village Bakery is known for they're deli, as well as amazing cakes. Juanitas downtown, love the nachos/pizza. The Taco Spot, also by Home Team, has great tacos when the owner is there, good when not. The Wreck is most certainly worth the trip for the food, and the location.

ahhh, so its the best _new_ restaurant. I've been there a lot, it is very very good food. however its a major difference between the best and the best new comer. think All-American vs. Freshman All-American.

love Bull Street Gourmet. and I also agree about JB's on John's Island as having the best q in charleston. Home Team pales in comparison to the Smokeshack

Fat Hen is still great. Wild Olive still there haven't been in sometime.

The Wreck. Well Richard has gotten old and grumpy. Paying top dollar for things served on papryus plates...only takes cash as you know. If he runs out of something at 8pm...which is often because it always seems like his backups are low or just not there that is too bad.

This also includes beer which is often, he could go to the Scotchman to get more...but he doesn't it. I just won't support that place anymore. It was fun for a long time but now that guy is more about getting your dollar than creating a cool evening on the creek. Too many places to piss my $$ away on food in Charleston than to help him out at this point.

    Completely the opposite of SeeWee.
