OT: Computer Help

  • Mods please move this if it does not fall in to the category of OT threads for this board.

Guys I need help with my MacBook Pro from anyone who may have any help. I have googled the problem as well as tried to call tech support but they are closed for Christmas so I am at my last grasp trying to fix my computer so any help is greatly appreciated.

My Macbook pro is stuck in the hibernation mode and I cannot get it to wake up. I'm using my wife's computer to post this. I have tried shutting it off and restarting, I have taken the battery off, I have tried to reset smc (i think thats what the abbreviation was) all to no avail.

Has anyone ever had this happen to them and if so what did you do to fix it? I really appreciate any help as I have had a hard time finding any so far from google or Apple.

  • when you say stuck in hibernation mode, do you mean whenever you open the lid or turn it of, it shows the grayed out screen with the loading bar at the bottom, but it never completes?

edit: after a little googling there are a couple different scenarios in discussion, can you provide a step by step description of what happens?

  • The screen never comes on, it stays black. When ever I do the shut down it doesn't do a full shut down. The things I found on google told me to reset something and also try a shift, ctrl option power button combination, which didn't work.

The light on the button to open it when it is closed stays solid when it is closed and when it is opened it goes out.

Worst problem I have ever had with my MB Pro.

  • Try starting up your MacBook from an alternative system disc. Say, original system disk or Snow Leopard install disc. If it starts and all is well, you have corrupted software. Boot from alternative disc and run repair under utilities, or other 3rd party software.

If you can't fix it yourself, I highly recommend a visit to your nearest Apple store.

I just had a MacPro tower logic board fail (not their fault, I was monkeying around), and they replaced it with a new Apple warranted part cheaper than I could buy a used one off the internet and install myself.

Although I normally fix it myself, this time the Apple Store on King Street, Charleston, has been a first class service experience.

  • Hold down the power button for at least a minute or two. This will completely shut off the computer. You will hear it shut off. Let it sit for a couple of minutes and restart. Did it start normally? Did it sound like it started normally but you have no video? Did it have video up until a certain point and then go black?

I closed it when I left work on Thursday and traveled to my parents home. When I got there my wife took it out of my bag and it would not wake up after that. Have not been able to get it out of the hibernation mode since then. I have tried almost everything that I have found on google and Apple tech is closed for Christmas.

I'm beginning to think it may be the video card or something else, but I have no idea. Thanks for the help.
