OT: Golf slice

  • Anybody ever used the Medicus hinged golf club to help with their swing? I have a slice worse than bad. I have watched enough videos on how to fix it and gotten enough tips from friends. I can not take anymore. And, the other thing is that I seem to hook my irons/wedges. My swing is all screwed up. I really want to fix this myself and not have to take any lessons, but I may end up doing just that. Only been playing since this past December, and played about 72 holes. Quite a few driving range outings, however.

Dont buy any of that garbage you see like the medicus or other stuff from golf channel promo videos. Simply go see a pro at your local golf course or driving range. Sounds like you need a lot of help with the kinds of shots you are hitting. Also, once you get a decent swing working for you, I recommend you watch a lot of PLaying Lessons with the Pros on the golf channel. You will learn a lot about the intricacies of the game.

  • I have the Medicus. Have used it for years. Swing it a few times before playing. Learn to swing it properly and you will have a decent swing and should help greatly with your slice.

  • Quit breaking your wrists left/right. I guarantee that's what you're doing wrong.

  • Check your grip. Guarantee that's your first issue. Close your stance. Not a gimmick can fix these two.

  • Have you ever filmed yourself swinging (the golf club)? That really helps to make corrections on your own if you don't want to pay for lessons. Of course, you need to know what to look for, too...

  • Your doing what every other amateur does. Breaks the wrists and gets the hands behind the ball when in fact your supposed to have your hands and wrists ahead of the ball....so therefore you over compensate and cut across the ball...but when your pulling it you are doing it to an extreme. Work on getting your hands and hips out front.

Best thing I ever did for my golf game, period.

  • It could be worse. At one point i was averaging 275-285(consistently for years) off of the tee. Now, i sky everything to the tune of 200 yds. it's more than embarrassing. I can honestly say that golf is the only thing I've ever gotten worse at from practicing.

Sounds like you are practicing poorly and hurting your game. Maybe some time off from the game would help you. Or go get a lesson. if you are regressing, whatever you are doing while you practice is wrong.

Hey, Mark...how's are things going on the champions tour and have you spoken with Tiger lately?

Sorry, man...just messing with you...I am a 2-4 handicap and I've swung the Medicus a few times and think it's probably useful.
The bottom line with slicing is coming over the top on the downswing which is not easy to correct. I struggle with it myself at times.

Exactly. This early into your game you want to know the proper technique. Don't wait 10-20 years and then get lessons. Old habits are hard to break.

  • Go get a lesson from a PGA club pro or registered assistant.

Slicing? There is no way for anyone to tell you how or why without SEEING you swing a club.

But, because golf is CAUSE AND EFFECT, consider this:

The direction that the golf ball takes is determined by two things, just two:

The PATH that the club head takes during the swing and the POSITION of the FACE at impact. (That is why there are nine ball flight laws in golf.)

Go see a pro and get back to us. Ask a close friend (but NOT someone you golf with) for a referral.

And, watch Luke D and Luis O swings on TV as a visual...and let it sink in. Good swings in which to relate.

Former pro (20 years removed) and current registered financial advisor
(love the game just hated working weekends, oh, and also the low pay was a drag)

    Good Luck.

    garnet stats

  • no one can tell you how to fix YOUR slice without seeing it.

the clubface is open in relation to the target line at impact. That's teh only thing that can be said for sure. that could be caused by by 100 different things.

Go get your swing on video and see for yourself which 1 (or maybe 10) of the 100 things you should adress to get that clubface square during that millisecond at impact

    Years ago

I use to play with a guy that tried to sneak vasoline on the clubface mainly driver.
Didn't help much so he kept aiming left once in a while he would get the face square hit it dead where he was aiming. Funny to watch.

Been golfing many years you will not go wrong having a pro help you a few times at very least.
    Good Luck!

Quick fix is to tee the ball lower. Long term fix, get a lesson. Probably more to do with ball position in your stance. The ball is probably too far towards your back foot for driver causing you to swing under it and pop it up.

  • Since you have only played 72 holes but hit a lot of balls on the range, stop swinging the clubs until you get a lesson from a professional. You are only ingraining bad habits and with as little time invested ,you could easily cure these and start over with a good swing before they are too deeply ingrained.

  • Strengthen your grip and dont roll your wrists during the takeaway. Should fix the slice at least

I've played the game over 40 years. I'll give you some sound advice. Go to a good Country Club pro someone that teaches the swing. Listen to him and then hits balls. As Hogan said, "the answer is in the dirt".....

Listening to me or anyone else on here will not help you. Gimmicks will not either. Spend a little money with a pro and then work...

this and you need more time on the course instead of wearing yourself out on the range. Takes the focus of hitting a "golf shot". 72 holes is not a lot of golf.

  • Can't be said enough... go get some lessons. You don't have to spend a fortune... even just a few lessons will pay huge dividends. Best $ you can spend on golf.

Swing harder and faster. That should do it.

Just a few thing that can make a slice before you make a swing. Ball position, grip,Grip pressure, alignment(feet hips shoulders)posture, equipment not fitted for the golfer. A bunch more pre-shot troubles. Then there are swing problems. More than bones in a body.
Do you have a pre-shot routine? All the pros do. Why do you think you can get away without one? Show me a guy who doesn't and I'll get all his money.
Take lessons Beginners lessons. Get ready for some serious down time because your swing will be going through some major changes.
When you learn to practice correctly, you will start making progress. The main thing is to have fun.
