OT: I love Golf but the Pros can be irritating

  • sometimes. It always bothers me when they get upset when someone snaps a picture in the backswing. Scowls, hissy fits, contortions. And, hecklers get ejected. Don't even think about anything above a whisper while they are putting.
Maybe they never played a team sport. How about shooting a free throw with 10,000 people screaming at you? Or, trying to get a play off coming out of the opposing endzone with 85,000 people going crazy? How about being at bat, a 3-2 count, bases loaded, on the road?
I think if there was a lot of noise on the golf course, the players would adapt and have a lot more fun. Be a lot more fun to follow as well.

I have always said the same thing. Please spare me the "golf needs 100% concentration jargon." If they are as good as they think, they should be able to perform under any conditions. Pro golfers are divas. I get the gentleman's game aspect of it, but it's still a sport...a yuppie sport, but still a sport.

Well you and I can go play two rounds together. The first we will play the game they way it was meant to be played. then the second round we wil both heckle each other and scream and yell while each other plays. You will see just how hard it is to make a good swing on the ball when there is the slightest noise.

I play but don't claim to be good. Are golfers that mentally weak where the slightest noise messes up their swing? Give me a break.

I see the differences in those other sports however, if you make a sudden movement/noise that gets the golfer off of his concentration then you may get yourself a hozzle rocket shank that nails a spectator in the head. Ever thought about that?

You're right, Golfers don't need 100% concentration to be successful. I played college golf and can attest to that. During my college years I had a lot more on my mind than playing golf but I still played fairly well IMO. The difference is, when the pros have 100% concentration the results are better, therefore it is more fun to watch.

    Fair enough.

  • If you are playing good you can't hear or see a thing. When your missing 3 footers for par, breathing bothers you.

  • I see the point. If there was always noise on the course, then it wouldn't be such a big surprise. Guess that's the beauty of golf. It's a game of respect.

I've played golf for 30 years. I respect it and appreciate the traditions. My stance is this: unless your competitor or a fan is throwing something at you, running at you or attempting to hit you with a club, I think a little noise shouldn't bother you. I actually would rather have someone talking while I play. Seems more natural for an athlete.

its not mental weakness at all. Ive played with dicks who make noises, cough, drop clubs etc. And it can lead to some errant shots. I think golf is the most difficult sport out there. I do think its much easier to make a free throw with everyone yelling, than to sink a 10 foot putt with no one else on the course. I think that throwing football to a target that has been rehearsed hundreds of times is easier than hitting a pitching wedge from 135 yards out. There aare mor factors in a golf shot than in swing of the bat in baseball.

I could give you several stories about the slightest noise making someone flinch. The simple fact is this. The game is meant to be played in a quiet environment. Thats how everyone who plays practices and anticipates playing. Had we all grown up with people yelling at us, ten yeah Im sure golfers would handle it better. So

But to answer your question directly.... yes, when someone drops their keys on the cart path in the middle of your swing, it can and in most cases does affect the result in a negative fashion.

Well I do. I think the game should be played with respect, the way it was meant to be played. I have played for 25 plus years, and I can tell you if you want to intentionally screw someone up, cough at the top of their swing, or blurt something out. Its one thing if there is a convo going on, but every respectale golfer I have ever played with stops moving, shuts up and lets his playing partner(s) hit the ball in silence and then gets back into the convo or finishes what they were doing. typically its the folks hat are ignorant to the traditions or dont take the game seriously who dont get this.
