OT- Maui Jim Sunglasses

  • I've never understood the concept of paying a lot of money for sun glasses. Even walmart has good polarized glasses, and considering how easy they are to break or lose I'm more worried about how they work instead who sees I have expensive sunglasses. Protect my eyes, and help me see better on the water the few chances I get out there each year. I'll spend my $ on a nicer charter boat instead lol. To each their own however.

Ill tell you i have oakleys and a pair of maul jims i dropped the maui jims and the polarized lenses cracked in the middle and i have dropped the oakleys numerous times and never even scratched them. Just save your money and buy the oakleys. Just the lenses for mine were 130.00 a piece i paid 295.00 for the glasses originally. The polarized lenses for the oakleys are only 90 or 95

Never tried the maui Jim's but I had a three year old pair of Coasta del Mar 580 shades that the rubber on the arms was brittle. Sent them in and two weeks latter got them back with new frames at no cost. Needless to say their customer service kicks ass.

  • Over the years i have owned nearly every brand of sunglasses including MAui Jim rayban Oakleys smithetc.
All have served me well. Maui jims were the lightest pair and very comfortable to wear. to me great lenses. i Currently ride a Motorcycle on the weekends and wear Costa's Man o war glasses with side pieces that block wind and peripheral glare. love the glasses.

iAs a youngman went through 10 or 15 pair of 10 to 15 dollar sunglasses working in myrtle beach. i would leave them on a table or sit on them or some girl would work her ways and end up with my glasses. After i bought my first pair of RAy BAns from Moe Levy"s in columbia (Aviators) i took car of every pair i had and all lasted for years. mattter of fact my 18 year old daughter found my old aviators in a drawer last year and wore them for 6 months . now i don't know where they are. LOL
    to each there own

  • Highly recommend Maui's...had mine for several years and will not buy anything else again. Esp. if you like to fish.

  • I've had a pair for a year and a half. I've worn others. I always lose them but decided to try a pair of Maui's. They are the lightest and most comfortable I've have found. Sometimes I go looking for them and realize I have them on already. I'm sure all are good but I have no complaints about these. Very comfortable. I paid about $159 at Columbia Eye Clinic.

  • I have a pair of Costa's because I like the way they look and the way they feel. They are obviously overpriced, but I don't care.

  • With the way I go through glasses I can't bring myself to pay $300 for a pair. I've had several pairs of Smiths and like them. At $100 its easier to stomach losing them in the Atlantic, which I will, and have.

Not all Maui's are 300. You can get some great pair between 159-200

  • Claymation - probably so, does falling off a polling platform in December constitute too drunk?

  • Being an eye doc, I can tell u the old adage applies in that u get what u pay for.

IMO- you should always get polarized as this treatment to a sunglass blocks all reflected light from different surfaces like water, snow, and the road. So it's a must when you are talking about increasing your quality of vision. As far as MJ- they go a step further than other sunglass companies in that they treat their lenses with anti reflective coating on the front and back surface of the lenses to cut down even more error potentially entering into the eye.
My favorite lenses are Oakley just for the fact that they have a vast assortment of different lens tints and colors. Maui does not vary the selection there. It usually has a gray tint or amber. Oakley has about 10-15 different tints that can enhance your vision for any situation. For example, I have a patient who is a mountain biker but doesn't want it too dark but wants protection. So in his case Oakley was the best as far as light transmission.
One other point I make to my patients is that the sunglasses that do not have a UV protection sticker on it.....do not buy. It's just a tinted lens and actually can allow for more UV light to enter in with a dilated pupil behind a dark lens. So be careful there.
Also remember that the name brand sunglasses that historically are good, like the ones posted in this thread, have the tint INSIDE the lens and not coated on like the $25 jobs u will find at Wally world. Not that it is bad but again you get what you pay for.

All this clear as mud? Anyone who read all this crap will be sent a bill.....go cocks!!!

True love is hard to find, sometimes you think you have true love and then you catch the early flight home from San Diego ....

  • Its all about the lenses.
Maui and Serengeti have 2 of probably the top 5 driving lenses in the market. True quality!
Costa's are built more for action and those lenses are built for sun glare off the water.
Buy what you need for what you are using them for.
I have Maui's for driving, Costa's for fishing.

You get what you pay for. I have blue eyes that are really sensitive to light, so sunglasses are a must for me in the day light.

I have a pair of Maui Jim's, Oakley's, and RayBan's, but my favorite are my Serengeti's.

X3. I've worn a lot of sunglasses over the years with my flying hobby.

The best I have used are Serengeti (a bushnell company). Anyone that makes quality optics will make quality glasses. B&L, Bushnell, etc.

I prefer glass lenses for their scratch resistance. Do yourself a huge favor and buy a polarized lens.

Why are Maui Jim sunglasses so expensive? Are they that great? Does anybody own any?

    Own Oakelys, Costas & MJ.

I bought the MJ's for playing golf and love them, hardly tell they are there and don't fog up on me.
All my golfing buddies have MJ's ,thats how I found out about them.
Love the Costas, But they are a heavier set I use for fishing, beach and driving.
There are online sunglass outlets that will save you major $ if you know exactly what style you want.

  • I am the proud owner of 2 pairs of what the hospital gave my friends that had cataract surgery. They fit over my regular glasses very well and...they didn't cost me a damn thing. I put 40 lbs of fileted crappie in the freezer Saturday and shot 81 on the golf course Sunday.I saw the fish and the ball very well. $300 for sunglasses....I don't think so.
