OT: Tablets, recommendations?

  • Can anyone help me with a tablet for a 6 year old? My wife and I have an ipad that we like but we're not going to buy one that expensive for a 6 year old. The wife has downloaded a bunch of school related games on it that he plays all the time so we're thinking about getting him one for Christmas. Can anyone recommend anything in the $100 to $150 range?

  • Battery life between my two Note wins hands down. In fact besides the screen ( no HD screen not 1920 resolution on the Note) it out performs the Infinity in every way and I use them both. It is way snappier, as well as smoother. The screen on the Infinity is about as close to the Retina ips screen of Ipad as you are gonna get. Super nice display , but the quad core processor and 2 gb of Ram along with the multi-tasking capability (side by side two apps or even more with the JB update) the Spen Note is just better for me. Better battery life too, the display on the note isn't bad by any means it just isn't badass if you get my point.

  • I own an iPad, iPad2, Nook Color, Kindle HD (wife), Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7 inch), and Samsung Note 10.1, and have played around with many others.
i always give the following advice on tablets:

The 7 inch form factor tends to be easier to use overall in terms of transporting from place to place. Get a minimum of 16GB of storage space, as they tend to fill up fast if you store a lot of music and video.

If you are mostly interested in ebooks and video, get the Kindle HD.

If you don't care much about syncing to your PC, and the more complex and fractured environment created by Google Android isn't going to bother you get a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7 inch). This is my personal favorite, very versatile and can be found at Costco for 200 bucks now. It also allows use of an external SD card, a very important and often overlooked feature.

If your concerns tend to focus on your family and what they may be exposed to, go with the iPad or iPad mini. They are worth the extra cost. Resolution is outstanding, and iTunes provides the safest environment. Syncing back to your PC thru iTunes gives you full control over what apps and programs they are allowed to use. Apple does provide the easiest user experience.

If you expect a more business approach with your tablet, use the Samsung note 10.1. This is a 10 inch form factor, but looking at word docs and spreadsheets is easier on a 10 inch.

Good advice. I'd also say about the Kindle line, it runs Android but with Amazon's skin over it. You can get ebooks, video, magazines, from BOTH the Google Play Store and Amazon with any other tablet as well. The amazon app store is a downloadable app. Also if you go with the Nexus line (7 or 10) you get the latest Android version straight from Google (no carriers like Verizon to screw it up and make it out of date before you even get it). Also you can sync to your computer with any Android tablet and just use drag and drop to copy any movies/songs/files to your tablet. Pretty easy.

  • My kids have the Toshiba Thrive 10 inch tablets and I have been very pleased with it. So much so that they rarely use their laptops anymore. I have a Kindle Fire HD- pretty sharp. Choose it over the Google Nexus 7 because its faster adn has better speakers. Downloaded movies from Amazon look awesome and it does well as a general internet tool.

iPad Mini: 1,024x768 pixel resolution and 163 pixels per inch.

    Not that great, IMO.

Our 8 year old had a Kindle Fire (not HD). I think it was $150. Works well and does everything he needs it to plus some.

thanks man for that great analysis.

my wife has an iphone, I have a droid...I MUCH prefer the flexibility of the droid system on the phones at least, and would assume its even more apparent on a tablet...but unfortunately we have about 4,000 songs in itunes lol which is the only factor that makes me lean towards an ipad...because I'd be using on flights and having my own music on flights is important obviously.

also can't decide if the tablet would be family/house use for internet surfing, controlling our sonos, etc - then I'd want ipad so wife can use easily....however, I can see a TON of business uses for a tablet also (engineering consultant) and then no brainer I'd want a droid system.

leads me to another question: has anyone ever used an effective program for decoding itunes music into playable music on other devices?

I'll hang up and listen thanks.

I assume this is pre-DRM music purchased from ITunes prior to 2009 your asking about correct?

yeah like half of our music is from the encoded days.

edit: I know you can burn to CD then rip back, but that would take a while...looking for some freeware...have downloaded a couple that either didn't work, or did 10 songs then demanded money lol.

I use the PowerAmp music app on my droid phone, it can play .mp4 format (itunes). So I just copy the songs from my windows explorer to my SD card and boom! No conversion needed!

yeah mp4 is the current itunes format - however the old m4p encoded format that would be all songs downloaded pre-mid 2009 will not play until you convert their format. i am trying to do this without buying a $40 convertor or taking all Saturday doing it with CDs...
