IMHO, we need both the zone read and the I formation in order to be effective.
Shaw is not a classic drop back passer. His running ability is his greatest strength, although he throws a nice looking pass.
There are times, depending upon how we match-up, where we need to run more I than zone read. In other games, zone read will work better and we will not need as much I formation. In pretty much all cases, we need to be able to pass effectively, regardless of the formation.
