Orangeburg County has not been good to us.....

  • In football? Arturo Freeman was the last one I believe. I am not 100% sure about that. We have gotten Wynn Pelzer from Holly Hill and Blake Cooper from Neeses in baseball. Jhondre Jefferson from Santee in basketball. However, although there have not been very many D-1 players from the area, it seems Clemson always gets them. Adrian Dingle, Woody Dantzler, Jackie Robinson, an O-lineman they signed a few years ago (cant recall his name) and Jadar Johnson this year. They also Harold Jamison in basketball, and Felder on baseball eventually landed there. We never offered Tim Jennings either that i know of. Brimfield went to UT a few years ago. But, that does not seem like such a loss now. So, it has been nearly 20 years since we got a football player from O'burg Co.

Edit: just as I hit enter, I remembered we have a walk on punter, Michael Williamson, from O'burg. But, he transferred from Columbia University.

  • We got the Jeffrey brothers from Calhoun County near O'Burg. But that is all I can recall.

  • Who cares. We own Clemson right now. They are our bitches - IN EVERY MAJOR SPORT - regardless who they sign.

  • It is all about coaching at OW. Most of those kids stay in trouble etc. Rough area believe it or not. Wilson @Calhoun County can tell the kids what to do and they listen and respect him.

Seems like Wilson would tell them to stay out of trouble.

  • Tremaine Tyler was a starting Corner in the early/ mid 2000's from Edisto High.

Maybe I am reading the article in the T&D Orangeburg paper wrong, but I got the impression that his coach sold Clemson more than USC.

Glad you mentioned Michael (his older brother was my roommate thoughout college and still good friend). And the only reason he went to Columbia to begin with was so he could try out receiver. He missed the south too much so he came on back. If he turns out to be the punter that I know he can be, then we'll need to thank Shane Beamer for keeping in touch with him.

Also, Blake Cooper came from Neeses, which is in OB county I think.

  • I talked to Jackie Robinson back in the spring (he is an assistant at OW) and he told me they can't get many kids to play football anymore because they would rather run the streets. Sterling Lucas (NCState) was their last D-1 player.

  • Orangeburg Co has a lot of very wealthy farmers, many of whom are Tigers.

    redfisherman

  • Those wealthy farmers could care less about Orangeburg County football, unless maybe it's Orangeburg Prep. Orangeburg just doesn't have the community support behind teams like say a Byrnes does, where a booster's money could sway a player either directly or in-directly. High school football just isn't big-time in Orangeburg County.
