Orlando Sentinel article on Spurrier vs. Meyer (wow)

  • I apologize if this has already been posted, but had to share this article.

Steve Spurrier Florida: Steve Spurrier Florida legacy overshadows accomplishments of Urban Meyer despite two national titles - Orlando Sentinel

One former University of Florida football coach is revered for his unapologetic honesty. The other former University of Florida football coach is reviled for his manipulative deceptions. Guess which

Yes he was. I heard the AD asked him to interview for the job just like all the other applicants. Supposedly, Spurrier told Foley "my resume is in the Trophy Case."

  • Thank you for sharing this good article. What I found most amusing was the Ohio State fan who kept referring to all southerners, SEC fans, etc. as rednecks, trash and other invective. I encourage him to go to his front door and look to the vacant house on the left and then to the vacant house on the right. If he is the least bit curious as to where all of his neighbors have gone, he need look no further that Mt. Pleasant, in the redneck, inbred South for the answer.

If we suck so bad down here, why do all of those mother firetruckers spend their whole lives trying to move here? Better yet, please spread the word that we are all inbred, we do suck and we are trash and the South in general and South Carolina in particular are terrible places to live, so please stop moving here!

MB, you are exactly right. That IS how it occured.

Not sure if Mr. Diaz's whole point of the article is to take a stab at Urban Lyer or to say UF should have hired SOS or both but the fact is Floriduh NEVER HAD A CHANCE TO REHIRE Steve Spurrier!!! He never interviewed or expressed interest.

I do like him taking a swipe at UM however-he is WAY overrated.

He expressed interest, but they wanted him to interview. He thought that there was no need to interview, and I happen to agree with him. He built Florida into what it was at the time, and why should he? He left the program to try and take a shot at the next level, not because it had anything to do with UF. Good for us though, because now he's a Gamecock. And when all is said and done, he'll be on our Gamecock Mt. Rushmore as well.

This is incorrect. Had Foley done what McGee did I'm convinced Steve Spurrier would be the Head Coach at Florida. That's not to say it would have definitely happened, but Spurrier was interested in returning to UF when he left Washington, but he wanted it to be handed to him. When Foley told him to interview it ticked him off and he wanted to go somewhere he could play them every year. LSU and South Carolina were the 2 possibilities. LSU wasn't open yet, but it was a forgone conclusion that Saban was bolting to the NFL, however, McGee never gave them a chance to make a pitch.

Way out of context with that quote. It refers to a member of the lucky sperm club who was handed all the keys in life but acts like he has accomplished something. It was used a good bit while George W. was in office.

Urban Meyer might be a P.O.S., but he has accomplished a lot and didn't have anyone holding his hand or helping him get ahead.

I can shed a little bit more light on this matter.

IMHO, Foley may have been the one to physically ask SOS to interview for the job, but the brand new UF president, Bernie Machen, is the one that told Foley that SOS would have to interview for the job. Machen had just left Utah, where Meyer was the coach, to go take over the presidency at UF. When Ron Zook got fired, my gut tells me, Machen probably wanted Meyer. When SOS indicated interest, because of Meyer, he was told he would need to interview. If that was indeed what pissed off SOS, I agree with him...his resume is in their trophy case.

In the late 90's, I worked in a fitness center, in Gainesville, with Foley's wife, Molly. She and I were actually pretty good freinds (been to their house, met Jeremy, met her two dogs, etc...), but since have not remained in touch. In 2004, after, SOS came to us, I called Molly to rub it in that we had SOS as our coach. I straight out asked Molly if Jeremy actually asked SOS to interview for the job or if it was because of Machen, and she indicated she didn't know. Don't remember exactly what she said, but I could tell she was uncomfortable with my question. My guess is that her husband and other UF officials asked her not to discuss the matter.

Sorry, I know this is a lot of words for just a little bit of info.
