People hate on Jr

  • but he has consistently had one of the best wr's in the league year in year out.

  • No you see those guys don't count because they are good.

See he has to make some guys that aren't good into all Americans, except then they'd be good so they wouldn't count.

Look who our quarterbacks were. These guys were straight up ballers despite extremely inconsistent quarterback play. Not to mention Jeffrey came in extremely raw, mckinley came in as a quarterback, and Rice came in as a low three star, picking us over Syracuse. Spurrier Jr. deserves some credit whether you want to be in denial about it or not

I think he is a pretty good teacher of the position. His receivers block well, or try to, and he seems to get the most out of their ability.

He isn't that great of a recruiter though, and he made mistake trying to chase after the next Sidney rice with a whole bunch of players.

  • My two cents is as follows:

I think Spurrier Jr. does a great job teaching guys how to catch the football. Since he has been at Carolina there have been very few glaring drops, and even great receivers like Sidney and Alshon will drop a pass or two here or there. Kenny McKinely developed very well into a primary WR after Sidney left too early for the NFL.

The SOS system has always devised plays to get the best WR on the team many opportunities to catch the football. Sidney did it, McKinely after him, and then, eventually Alshon. Most of the pass plays are designed to go to THAT WR.

The area I think our WR's struggle with is route running. That is the NFL's biggest knock on our WR's coming out of Carolina. The routes are not run crisply and there is not a lot of separation. Additionally, when our QB goes into scramble mode, very seldom do our WR's do a good enough job coming back to the QB or breaking off a route to help the QB.

Alshon made a lot of these plays because Garcia just threw it up to him.

So, I think the truth lies somewhere in between. We have had much worse WR coaches than SOS Jr. He does a great job teaching guys how to catch the football, but our WR's could use more teaching on running better routes, getting separation, and helping out the QB when he goes into scramble mode.

  • Its like heads I win, tales you lose.

If they are good, they were good when they got here. If they are not all-americans, Jr has failed them somehow.

  • i dont thing he's a bad coach, but he really hasn't had much of a chance to prove himself either. mckinnely was an excellent college receiver and then he got a true freak that drew a lot of awes. we'll learn a lot this year about how well and how fast he can develop a corps.

I agree. Don't know how he has not won in the past few years. I think when he does win, he will continue to win. He's sooooooooo close. Love me some Jr-moderately homo

  • i have only met a few people that didn't think JR does a good job. I don't talk to them any more. I personally think he does a very good job and has done a great job since he has taken over as RC

  • This is certainly the year Jr can prove himself as a wr coach. Personally I thought the guy who left for the HC position at Middle Tenn. was the best we have had in a long time.

We have had people breaking receiving records ever since Jr has been receivers coach. Sidney, then Kenny, then Alshon. Bet Ace has a huge year this year.

  • I think the only real knock on him is that we never have a lot of depth at receiver. Other than that, I think he's a phenomenal coach.

Stockstill was a good WR coach. The difference once he was hired was immediate.

How did Rice leave too early? He was a second round pick and had a very good rookie year.
