Palmetto Proving Grounds

Nothing better than a mature live oak, but they won't grow fast enough. I pass a row of them that's about a mile long on the way to work each day. They were planted before I came to Aiken in 92 and still don't look "mature". In fact, I have a red maple in my yard that's 7 years old and is larger than the live oaks.

There are 142 live oaks going in. 100 scarlet oaks. all 12' height minimum and 4" caliper minimum at planting.

For the average fan and tailgater the GRove appears to be non-existent. I'm told it's pretty classy and I've been to Ole Piss several times...never been IN. You either have to have your servants take stuff in on Fridayor drag it in (maybe get coolies to take it in) on Saturday. While the thought of it has a certain romance it is way overblown. My guess is that our place will completely outclass that or any other such tailgate area that I know of. I've heard our place trashed so much by so many of you but for a good tailgate experience I cant think of a place in the SEC than our old or new facility., The only place I really liek a bit better in places is Auburn since the have semi-permanent (double-wide) rest rooms well scattered thru the pastures and nice shuttles

Over the next several months, there will be trees going up and power lines coming down. There will be 100 “Garnet Oaks” on the Farmers Market property - 60 along the Garnet Way, which will run down the middle of the property, and 40 along Bluff Road.

There will be a total of approximately 750 trees on the property in full. The trees planted on the property is scheduled to begin sometime in late March.
