Reading the thread about the Byrd, Ellington & Sanders practicing at the same WR position and questioning the coaches decisions in that regard got me to thinking about many Gamecock fans, myself included, questioning a coaches decision in 1979. If my memory serves me correctly, George Rogers and Steve Dorsey were the fullbacks entering fall practice in 1979 and Johnny Wright and Spencer Clark were the tailbacks. Johnny Wright suffered a season ending knee injury in pre-season practice and Coach Carlen announced that he was moving George Rogers to tailback. He spoke to the students on the fraternity quad just before the start of the season and many students questioned the wisdom of his decision to move George Rogers from fullback to tailback. Obviously, as history tells us, Coach Carlen made a very wise decision in regard to that position change.
My point is that there is nothing wrong with questioning our coaches decisions as myself and many other did back in 1979. However, when doing so, we need to keep in mind that the coaches know a lot more than we do about our players and their abilities. For example, I assumed that since George Rogers played fullback, he was too slow and did not possess the necessary skills to play tailback. As we all now know, I obviously made an uninformed assumption as to the skills that George Rogers possessed. Coach Carlen, on the other hand, knew the skills that George Rogers possessed and based on this knowledge he move him to tailback and "the rest is history". Interstingly enough, when Johhny Wright came back from his knee injury in 1980 he played fullback and blocked for George Rogers that season. He returned to tailback for his senior season in 1981.
Spurrier...I appreciate him plenty
