Practice Observations 3/19

  • I was kind of all over the place today. Went from the main viewing area to the back corner and back again. There was a big portion of practice that went on at the far end and it hard to get a good angle. Luckily they moved 7v7 and 11v11 back to the front side before practice ended.

Unfortunately they still have not replaced the blown out speakers at
    the Proving Grounds.

    Warm up soundtrack for today:
    Macklemore - "Can't Hold Us"
Young Jeezy - "All White Everything"

    Notable Quotes:

"Hurry up DJ! Get your big ass around!" - Elliott gettin after DJ Park during field goal drills.

"Where is he? Where is he? Damn it he's right there!" - Botkin lets Rainey know that he was out of position. Ward stopped and gave him some personal coaching as well but Botkin was a bit more forceful about it.

"Hey! You're a left tackle aren't ya?" - Elliott wants all of the tackles grouped together for a drill. I guess Zandi wasn't paying attention or just didn't quite hear his instruction.

"Don't go hug him!" Botkin to one of the defenders for congratulating
an offensive player during the Redzone drill.

Watched LB drills for a little while. Not much action during those drills...

Lewis, Rainey, and walk on James King all drop picks back to back to back during an agility/hands drill. Surprisingly Botkin let's it slide. in the drill Botkin gave them signals on which way to shuffle over the bags and then which way to finish. If the player finished to the left he had to blow past a standing bag. If he went to the right then he had to catch a pass. If they missed the pass they had to recover the fumble no matter how far away from the drill it went. That time there were footballs and players flying everywhere.

Holloman and Golightly gettin chewed out for not giving max effort during a sled drill.
"Run you feet! Run your feet!" Same goes for Rainey. Only a couple of players didnt get called out
during the drill. Diggs was one. He looked more explosive that any of the other linebackers during that one.

Switched sides to see what the O is up to...

    OL 2 v 1
Elliott constantly teaching. From the little I watched everyone seemed to be doing well with the drill. Not much yelling going on. Much more encouragement.

    TEs working on blocking.

QBs/WRs throwing a variety of different routes to the far side. Nothing notable to report as they they were playing against air. There was a couple of drops, couple of mistimed throws but for the most part it was uneventful.

Team drills. Really hard to tell what is goin on bc they are doing bc there is a wall of non participants blocking my view. Seems that they are only practicing running plays and play-action. First was a short full team session and then some 7v7. Defense has been getting the better of the Offense. Lots of stuffs and short gains.

DT stretch to Wilds. He gets to the second level.
DT to Shamier deep on play action. Thompson runs downfield and they give each other a leaping chest bump.

Nos keeper up the middle three times in a row. Bottled up the first two, gets loose on the third.

Nos backs into shotgun but just hands it off. Couldn't see the runner but he go some yardage.

Mitch hands it Salley. He breaks some arm tackles and gets through.

Mitch Hand off to Wilds. Lewis misses the TFL and Wilds gets back to the line. Maybe a positive yard.

Mitch play action incomplete to the sideline.

DT handoff to Wilds. Made one man miss and got to the second level.

DT fakes the handoff to Salley but gets stopped for a loss.

DT hand off to the FB#49 but he trips over a defenders leg and goes down to end the drill.

    Team Punt Return
Hampton drops first punt on team punt drills.

Second one shanked badly. Shaq can't get to it before it rolls out of bounds.

Jones the first to successfully return a punt. Whoop Whoop!

Low snap skips across the ground and past Hull (or Fish).

High snap but Hull (or Fish) gets it off just in time. Hampton returns.

This drill did not look good today. At all. Glad they quickly scrapped it for some team drills.

    7v7
DT to Shaq but Elder breaks it up

    Nos check down to Fuller.

Mitch comeback to Smith. A little late Legree jumps out front to break it up.

Nos throws into traffic for Busta. Bounces off his fingertips and out of bounds.

DT hits Jones on a slant. Breaks a tackle from Golightly and gets up field.

Hails throws pick to Moody on out.

Mitch drops it in for about 30 yards right over Moody's head. It wasnt a tight spiral but it was right where it needed to be.

Hails throws a little low to Shamier on the comeback but its dropped. He should have caught it though.

    Redzone Drill
Dt has no where to throw. Everyone covered. Right as they blow the whistle he throws it anyway but no one is playing. It would have easily been a sack.

Nos corner fade to Shamier but Hampton was all over him. A little overthrown as well.

Mitch hits Smith on a short stick.

Nos check down to FB#49 over the middle

DT looks off a defender and hits Fuller wide open over the middle for 6. Really nice play for all those involved.

Sidney Rhodes with a PBU in the endzone. Ball was intended for Smith. He should have gone to it instead of leaving his feet.

    Hails check down to FB#49...again..

DT hits Shamier on the sideline at about the 2. He grabs it with one
hand and gets it over the pylon before stepping out. Play of the day. NFL stuff right there.

Nos tries to hit Busta but there are three defenders there. Should not have thrown it under any circumstance.

Mitch throws to Dwayne Duckett but Williams pushes him down. Probably PI in a game.

DT to Busta in the back of the endzone. Puts it where only his man can get it but Busta can't pull it in with one hand. Would have been a highlight catch similar to that dude from LSU against Arky last year. Well maybe not that good but it would have been one of the best plays of the day.

    11 v 11

    Wilds bounces to the outside.

Davis breaks through the line up the middle. Tough run.

    DT quick screen to Shaq.

DT throws behind his receiver. The receiver dives back but but can't hold on. Couldnt tell who it was.

Davis slips at the line. Stays up but would have been crushed in a real game. They blew it dead before he got really hit.

DT to Shamier. Another nice grab at the sideline.

Salley up the left side. Good gain.

Nos swing to FB#49. Everyone's new BFF. Who is this guy?

Green TFL on Salley. FF too.

They blow the whistle before Nos gets sacked by Diggs.

Nos tries to hit Jones on the run. Hit him in the hands but it got there as soon as his head got turned around. Wasn't ready and dropped it.

Roberts recovered a fumble. Didnt see the hit or ball carrier. Just saw Roberts emerge from the pile with the rock.

Quarles busts through and breaks up a handoff between Mitch and wilds. Golightly recovers and would have been in a footrace for the pylon.
"Pick that ball up boy! Go Kelcy! Go Kelcy!" - K. Lewis as the play unfolded.

Mitch avoids pressure by stepping up and hits Owens in the sideline. Really nice play by the freshman.

Mitch screen to Smith but the play is blown dead for some reason.

Mitch qb draw for a solid gain.

DT slant to Fuller. Doesn't gets much after it but makes a nice grab.

English swats the pass at the line. Think DT threw it but could have been someone else.

DT qb draw. Looks like 20 on 3rd and 19 in Pickins County.

Bad snap to Nos. He bobbles it before just wrapping it up.

Davis with the counter for a few positive yards.

Nos deep to the endzone but no one is there. He is lucky Moody wasn't a little deeper. He jumped back for it but couldnt quite get there. No receiver even close. EDIT: From reading Tony's Impressions thread it seems that Roland was actually back there and got the TD on this play. I don't know how I missed it. I think the CB must have been standing right in the way and blocked my view.

Holloman with a TFL on Wilds. Wilds tried to keep running after the
    whistle while Holloman let up.

Clowney could've eaten Hails whole but let up. I guess Spurrier wants
him to take it easy on our guys.

Screen to Jones but he falls as he cuts up field.

Shaq does much better with his screen to the other side. Big gain.

That's all folks. I'll post my overall impressions in a bit.

  • Overall Impressions:

    - I still think Wilds has looked better than Davis overall this spring but today they were fairly interchangeable.
    - I checked the roster for the #49, the fullback, but couldnt find him. He didnt do anything spectacular but the QBs looked his way an awful lot. So either our DBs were locking our receivers down or our receivers were not doing a good job of getting open.
    - I thought Jody Fuller looked much better today. I did not watch 1v1s with WR vs. DBs but in team drills he looked a lot better than the last two practices.
    - Holloman was starting instead of Rainey today. I think that had to do Rainey's play during individual LB drills as Botkin had to get on him a good bit. Holloman took advantage and made some plays. It will be a spirited battle throughout the spring.
    - Diggs looked better this time out than last. In every practice he is all over the field but today he seemed to be making the right plays instead of the wrong ones.
    - Mitch is starting to impress me more than Nos. Every practice he has made a play where he avoids pressure by stepping up in the pocket and then getting rid of the ball. He did have a fumble but that was because of the play getting blown up during a hand off. Nos threw into coverage a lot and was just not as sharp.
    - Aside from one bad drop I thought Shamier looked like our best receiver again today. His one handed catch was Alshon revisited.
