Question about our recruiting of pitchers?

  • Not complaining mind you, just look at our results. I am curious, however about the lack of power arms on our staff. Almost every team in Omaha has multiple pitchers who throw in the mid-90's while the only guy you could categorize as a power pitcher on our staff is Price.

Is this by design? Does it play better to the small ball that college baseball has seen develop since the bats were changed? Do Tanner and Meyers favor pitchers instead of throwers? Do our recruited power pitchers always turn pro out of HS?

It would seem to me that as a defending 2 (soon to be 3) time defending NC we would be able to attract the premier pitching prospects in the country and those are usually guys who hit the gun at 93-97 mph consistently. To my knowledge Roth, Holmes and Montgomery were not highly recruited. Again, not questioning Tanner or arguing with the results. Anybody have any insight on this?

  • We lost our top power pitcher to the draft last yr, the kid from Spring Valley.

I want pitchers that pitch to location and have 3-4 different pitches that they can throw no matter what the count is at the time. That is what we have JMHO

  • I'd love to have a mid to a high 90's pitcher on our staff too, but...I'll take the 2 National Titles with a chance of a 3rd in the next few days. Everyone has them, we don't...hmmm....... We got 2 straight Titles, they don't.

  • I think it's really just a case of bad luck and the HS guys in SC with the power arms have been too good - as in Lyles and Guereri (sp?). If Koumas stays healthy he's a low 90's guy at worst. You know the staff would love a power arm just hasn't worked out.
I think it's also remarkable that we had so much success with guys that we thought could play and others didn't. The Tater fans get on Jackleg for getting out recruited. That is certainly the case in SC, but what has happened more is he has gotten out "evaluated" both by our successes (Wingo, Roth, Montgomery) and passes (Surrat, Moorefield, Haselden, Nester).

This, this is not the first time that happened either. Chad billingsly was supposed to be a gamecock. I would guess a good amount of these guys were not hard throwers when they showed up on campus but were projectable guys that worked out.

    And, there he goes.

You take a guy like Price, or Beal, or Koumas; low 90's with movement, over a guy who throws just a 95 mph fastball and doesn't know how to move it, or have any secondary pitches.

That said; almost anyone who is not overweight, and over 6'1 and throws 95 mph is going to get drafted high out of high school. If it moves, they are going to be first round picks out of high school, and won't go to college.. A guy like Strasburg had weight issues, was out of shape, and didn't have that kind of stuff out of high school. Florida and Vandy have a first round draft pick out of high school, but those are the only two first round picks to go to college in like the last 10 yrs.

Al, to answer your question: we are playing in the national title game for the third straight year. Are you not happy with the baseball recruiting? You could root for Florida or Vandy if you like, I would rather you pull for the Gamecocks. Plus, you would be rooting for teams that we have knocked off along the way to our NC's. But, you are certainly welcome, if the product Tanner is putting on the field is not to your liking.

just seems like an odd choice of topics, given the fact that we're about to complete an incredible three year run which has featured, primarily, one incredible pitching performance after another! i think we are attracting some premier pitching talent - the results speak for themselves.

IMO many on here are confusing pro "potential, with what it takes to be a highly effective college pitcher. Although they aren't mutually exclusive, they aren't as highly correlated as the op suggests.

TCU had a lefty that was a 1st round pick and turned down, i think, 4M from the Yankees to go to school. He pitched in the 2010 NCAA tourney.

I think Al was just encouraging discussion and not being abrasive. You might want to take note.

  • I think Al was just encouraging discussion and not being abrasive.

    That would be a first.

As for the OP's question, I talked to a kid that pitches for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans who said he used to throw mid 90s but now tops out at 92. When someone asked him why his response was that he learned how to pitch.

Some of it is socio-economic. Most kids in SC that throw that hard get drafted and sign because the money is too good. Callihan from Dillon can bring it and the Red Sox can bring him life changing money.

Power pitchers are so over-rated...Its sexy to come out the bullpen throwing 95-97, but unless you can hit your spots and have late movement, that power pitch will eventually be hit...

Ill take a Matt Price throwing 90-92 with a ball that moves constantly over anyone throwing major heat over the middle of the plate...

  • don't know how accurate this is but have heard Carolina referred to as the University of Sliders & Curveballs.

Not sure if that's because we are forced to rely on those pitches more than others because of the lack of power arms or just a misconception?

    GCIT

  • Clemson put multiple kids on the mound that touched 95. Didn't do them any good.

  • Yes, I'm sure that when our coaches can stave off the pros and enroll power pitchers who throw hard and throw well they do it.

  • Ridiculous that OP asks an interesting question about the team, and clearly states multiple times that it is not a knock on the team as is whatsoever, but instead a genuine curiosity about why our roster make-up is what it is.

And the thread STILL gets hit up with a bunch of snark about trusting the coaches yada yada yada. Will y'all please get off that high horse and allow us to have some level-headed, non-confrontational conversation around here?
