Questions for JC and the Board-Our Track Program

  • I heard Head Track Coach Curtis Frye speak at two of the Lunch with Lou functions a number of years ago, and I was extremely impressed with him. For years both the men's and women's track teams were in the Top Ten in the country. Neither program is nearly that strong now. Questions:

1-is the drop off primarily due to the lack of updated facilities ?
2-When will the track facility upgrades occur, and what is that plan ?
3-I saw where the great sprinter from Dreher, Brandon Sanders, committed to Carolina. Do we have other top recruits committed ?

For the record, I enjoy watching Track, and I hope Coach Frye gets the support he deserves.

  • i know a couple former track athletes and most have bad things to say about frye, mostly you were treated like dirt unless you were one of his top 3-5 performers.

  • There are other reasons (including recruiting budget and lack thereof) but those indoor facilities are a joke. They couldn't even run a 60m straight. And the track itself is poor quality.

I met a USC track athlete recently and he told me quite a lot about Frye and the team while he was at USC. He also was not a star on the team.

He said that the track athletes loved coach Frye and he treated them all very well. He said Frye continues to keep in touch with all of the kids he coaches. He said he was a strict disciplinarian and all of them knew they damn well better not get into any trouble.

The fact that he could have a great program with facilities that are so poor speaks volumes about his ability as a coach and a recruiter.

As has been stated, the man is very well respected in his field.

He's a wonderful guy and a great coach. USC's first ever NCAA title in any sport and at least two SEC team championships despite faciilites below those of many South Carolina high schools. Amazing. And in a league with as many traditional track powerhouses as football ones too.

Strangely, now that tennis has its new facility and softball is getting it's new stadium, men's and women's track is the only sport still right where it was when I got my bachelors degree in 1981. There are plans to upgrade the outdoor track in the facilities master plan, but somehow our first NCAA title sport got moved to the end of the line and it's my understanding that there is no timetable or funding for the track improvements.

  • I appreciate the insights from each of you. The consensus seems to confirm my thoughts ..... we are very fortunate to have Curtis Frye on our side. It is a shame that we have not been able to find a way to upgrade the Track facilities. I realize there are financial considerations involved, and I am hopeful that upgrades will come sooner rather than later.

plus one on the track program. I have a friend that coaches D1 track an d he says the facilities are waaaaaaaay below SEC standards. I have never seen the facilities ...so am just passing along what he said.

  • I ran track for USC from 93 to 95. I have several top 10 times at USC currently and still part of one School relay record. Iam a very proud supprter of our program. I did not run for coach Frye but I can say he is the BESTcoach for our program. His reputaion as a coach and person is beryind respeced not just in SC bu taround the world. Look at this bio. He does the most with the least (facilities). They were terrible when I was there and they are deplorable now. THis being said COACH FRYE'S reputation is what gets student athletes to Carolina. There is a very strong sense of pride for track alumni which students see either on TV or inperson at large meets.

When the facilities are upgraded we will see more athletes begin to consider our program. We have seen this across the board in other sports. I am truly excited to see what our staff will be able to accomplish with "proper" facilities.

More on Coach Frye as a person: We have a Alumnus who is a police officer in West Palm Beach Fl. who was severly injured in an accident the week of Thanksgiving. He just got home from rehab a few weeks ago (crushed foot and brain injuries) He did not run for Coach Frye but Coach has reached out to him and made sure that the team, staff and the university was thinking about him. He is a man who had deep passion for Carolina.

Just a few words about another great coach at Carolina.

  • Curtis Frye is well enough respected in the track community to draw Olympic caliber athletes to Carolina. he did early on, hence the national title. But as time has gone on and the facilities have not been upgraded, great athletes go where the great failities are. Frye does the best with what he has, but you can only make chicken salad out of chicken shyatt to a point.

We owe Frye facilities as he has actually delivered a national championship here. I thought we should have rebuilt the track facilities before we built Hyman a new office and parking garage, but that is just me.

I don't know about the funding or time table, but the reason it was taken last is because the scheduled improvements were to be made where the Roundhouse presently sits, which can't be torn down until the Administration building is completed.

Track may have missed the window for a bit, since we are near the end of funds for awhile. Might have to wait for the SEC to see some gains rather than losses from expansion.

Also the video board and indoor facility for football jumped into line.

Our track facilities are deplorable but Coach Frye and his assistants will benefit from the new admin building more then Hyman will. You have to remember that they are in the Roundhouse too.
