Quick poll: How many current USC coaches would you consider...

  • the best we've ever had in their respective sports in the history of our University?

Tanner? Two national championships have to make him No. 1 in baseball.

Spurrier? Probably, but it's still debatable.

Berson? I think he's pretty much the only soccer coach we've ever had. So... yes?

Staley? I don't know enough about our history in women's basketball to make a judgment here, and she hasn't accomplished a whole lot yet. But maybe in a few more years.

Curtis Frye? Probably so, but again, my knowledge of our history is limited in this area.

Would love to hear more thoughts, especially in some of the other sports like women's equestrian, golf, tennis, etc.

For now, I'm gonna say 3, maybe 4. Tanner, Spurrier, Berson and Frye.

Either way, I think you've got to think this is the Golden Age of USC Athletics. The only other era I can think of that comes close would be the late 60s/early 70s. ACC Championship in FB, the last 3-game win streak against Clemson and lots of wins in men's basketball and in baseball some CWS runs.

  • I would say Spurrier is a definite. One thing seperates him from the rest... An SEC East crown.

"I used to walk up a hill to and from school in my days", says every Clemson student ever.

  • Spurrier, Tanner, Berson and Frye absolutely.

Staley seems to have things going but hasn't done anything yet.

Shawn Elliott is the best OL coach FWIW.

  • Spurrier and Frye by a county mile.

As great as Tanner is, he wins by an edge over Bobby Richardson not a mile.

Berson is the only men's soccer coach we've ever had, so no contest there. Same for the equestrian coach.

Staley, not even close, but maybe someday. Even if you leave Parsons out because of her scandalous behavior, Nancy Wilson had five NCAA tourney trips in her first seven years including a Sweet 16. Susan Walvius had an Elite Eight in year five.

  • Tanner yes but Bobby Richardson is right there. Had he stayed I am sure he would have won a NC.

Spurrier yes. Jo Mo and Carlen close seconds.

Staley maybe. Pam Parsons had a great program, but too much fratenizing wid da girls.

    Frye - yes.

  • Frank McGuire, have we forgotten him? He only beat the tarheels for the '71 ACC championship.

Also, during my years at Carolina from 78-82 we had a woman's BB coach who has way more wins than Dawn. I forget her name. Someone help me out...she was let go for having a lesbian relationship with one of her player, or she was accused of sexual misconduct by one of her players.

Can't believe no one mentioned McGuire.

Only reason I didn't mention McGuire is because I was talking about current coaches who could be considered the best we've had. I don't think anyone would argue that Horn is better than Frank. peace

was that Pam Parsons? McGuire absolutely,no doubt. Tanner is quite a bit ahead of B Rich imo. Spurrier, no doubt, record speaks for itself. It is a great time to be a gamecock if you are a football and baseball fan. How fortunate are we to have those two at the same time. Brad Lawing is the best D Line coach it ever don the garnet and black. Chad Holbrook is the best recruiter ever, Whammy is a close second.
