  • 1. Arkansas- Until I see us stop Petrino's shallow cross offense (even if he's gone), they're #1. Hoping Whammy and Botkin can figure out what Ellis never could.
    2. Tennessee-Good OL, very good receivers, Bray can be very good. Headcase potential for him and DaRick, though.

Of the remaining SEC teams, I'd then go UGA, Missouri, LSU, Florida, Kentucky, Vandy. UGA and Murray generally have decent days against us, but their OL is suspect and they have some turnover at WR/TE. Mizzou's QB status is questionable due to injury, but they are going to throw it and are generally proficient at it. LSU will be better passing with Mettenberger, but will they have to be? The rest are QB poor and scheme poor.

Of the non-conference, I'd go Clemson, ECU/UAB (tie), Wofford. Clemson is going to run the Chad at us, and the WRs will be a good to very good group. However, OL is iffy at best, and Tajh obviously does not have fond memories of our defense. Both ECU under Ruffin NcNeill and UAB under Garrick (Petrino's OC last year) are going to sling it, but ECU will have a new QB not nearly as good as Davis last year, and UAB has no defense whatsoever. Wofford will throw 4 times, probably.

  • Based PURELY on passing ability:

    - Arkansas:
    - Tennessee
    - Georgia
    - Clemson
    - Missouri
    - Vanderbilt
    - LSU/Florida
    - East Carolina
    - Kentucky
    - UAB
    - Wofford

Arkansas is a clear #1. Tennessee, if Bray keeps his head on straight, can toss it around with the best of them. They have a lot of talent at WR and have a very good OL. Georgia, when Murray isn't playing erratic, has plenty of play makers to take advantage of. Clemson has a very good WR core, but pass protection should be a huge issue. Missouri's returning QB had very good stats, but I'm curious to see how he does against SEC defenses.

After that, there is a huge dropoff. Jordan Rogers showed some flashes last year, and Vandy could move up if he builds off of last season. LSU and Florida are total unknowns right now since we have no clue how their starting QB's will perform in a real game setting, but the talent (on paper) is there. East Carolina would be in the top 3 if Davis was coming back, but who knows without him. They run a Mike Leach style offense, so I wouldn't be shocked if they moved way up. Kentucky and UAB... who cares. Wofford runs the triple option I believe, so by default I believe they are last.

Well, provided Franklin comes back full strength. I don't have any reason to think he won't, but I admit that I haven't followed his progress that closely.
But if he is okay in the fall, he has the nation's #1 WR recruit to throw to.
Plus, I'm really impressed with Gary Pinkel.

  • I cannot believe only one of you had ECU in their top 3. Who throws it more, and is harder to sack, than ECU?

Grady Brown will do MUCH better against arky. Ellis had the dead wrong approach. He always thought we could rush 4 and just cover. They run too many picks and rubs and routes that force zone guys to commit and make a decision to give them so much time. You have to pressure the qb in a timing offense like that. Grady Brown will have us prepared for both. I expect different results.

-Only reason I have LSU at #7, is because I think they won't need to pass as much because they'll run so well
-The rest of it, most of you have reasons for why they are ranked where they are

You say so much stuff authoritatively like it's fact, but often you're just wrong. Petrino's offense is not timing based; it's a quick read scheme based on the shallow cross. If you blitz, you'd better get there...fast. EJ either wouldn't blitz or would only send one guy, which doesn't work very often against them. How many times did we see a TE or their slot or RB running wide open across the middle because our LBs couldn't cover them? Then if you drop a safety down, they hit you over the top. With their power running mixed in, it's a better scheme than Leach's "Air Raid, in my opinion.

The shallow cross is, quite possibly, the best pass play in football: Almost any quarterback can complete it; almost any receiver can run it (though there is

  • I won't try to rank them, but I will say that this might be the best group of QB's/passing teams we've had to face over a season in quite some time.

  • I think it's safe to say that we're going to face some teams who can throw the ball around this year. The defense really needs to step up in coverage if we're going to continue the type of defense we have had the past couple of years. It'll be a big test for Ward. Even if Ellis were still here, you'd have to expect a drop off in terms of overall defense this year. I hope Whammy is up to the challenge of proving himself over the course of a season, we're going to need it. I hope he's hungry. Hampton, Christian, and Auguste will have a chance to prove themselves big time this year.
