Recruiting myths

  • With the KC Crosby thread and his uncle is a fan of and so on. I thought I would share you with the biggest recruiting myths out there.
    1. Recruits are fans of a school. Less than 5% are actually fans of a particular school in the way that most of us think fans are. When recruits say they grew up rooting for a school, it most assuredly means they played that team on Play station. Facts are most recruits don't have the cash to attend games until they are a recruit and the last thing many want to do on a Saturday is get up early and travel to a game after playing on Friday. Dont take this the wrong way, but how many young African American kids do you see at games in the Brice? Very few and our team is mostly comprised of black men!
    2. Team apparel matters. Yeah kids like Under Armor, Nike, etc, but they don't care as long as it looks cool and what looks good to us is not what attracts a 17 year old male. Those god awful Maryland uniforms are right up the alley of many youngsters today. The brighter and more colorful the better for most teams because much like politics it is the more you are seen that helps not the actual message you convey.
    3. High school coaches don't push players to schools- some agree with this and some don't. Facts are that any high school coach is looking for a bigger and better deal , if they are not then they should be fired. Yes coaches are going to get their players to schools and yes they are going to work on getting them offers. Seriously do you think it is a coincidence that Dabos high school coaching friends come to the Clemson team camp? Some coaches are so good they can get guys offers that have no business being division 1 recruits. Position coaches in high school are very skilled at this and want their guys to get the best offers, they then use that to secure better jobs.
    4. Academics are the most important thing- the company line, but for most winning, tradition, bowls, tv, campus life, coaches, location, and the ability to get to the nfl are the keys. Yes their are some that actually care about academics but for most that is window dressing to smooth over parents. Why do you think schools have "football majors",you know the classes I am talking about. Most elite players arent in Pre-med, or business. Kudos to Marcus Lattimore for being in Public Health by the way.
5.Lying to recruits will catch up to a coach- dealing with 17-18 years old is easy just tell em what they want to hear and tell their parents what they want to hear. Facts are teens believe almost anything and lying will always work especially if you convince mom that you aren't lying. Also many recruits aren't educated in the ways recruiting works and have poor mentors that don't tell them to look at the facts.

Really, have you ever been recruited or helped a young man with their recruitment. Maybe you have inside info you liked to share, perhaps you have talked to players or know them personally and they told you those 5 things I said weren't true. Please enlighten me as to why I am so dumb. These are simply recruiting generalizations, not a gospel that every single recruit follows. I have worked with young men that are being recruited and mentored some of them when needed. I have kept in touch with many of them in college and afterwards, I know a little about the process.
Disagree with my assertions all you want but If all you are going to add to this board is name calling then please GTFO. I can go get that at TOS.

  • Also, never did I say that in order to be a fan you have to attend games. Most of us on this board are fans of the game and if given a chance would attend a game even without rooting interest. High school players don't do that often times even with free tickets, you would be surprised how little many actually watch a televised game. They watch bits and pieces but would prefer to hang out.

  • Generally, as a whole, i think you're mostly correct in your OP. Don't see why you've been called dumb. I suppose i am dumb as well.

  • Marcus McClellen is the best recruiting myth ever. Nothing else comes close.

  • Very accurate, OP. You can also add that the number of wins and losses over the previous few years matters very minimally to a lot of recruits. People on this board (and fans in general, I guess) have a tremendously hard time understanding this reality. Some recruits care a lot more about playing time or a comparatively laid back lifestyle than the immediate likelihood of competing for championships. Now more than ever, if you're a really good player on a crappy team, you'll still have every opportunity to be a high draft pick in the NFL. Also, the short memories are very quick to forget we pulled big recruits at times when our team wasn't winning many games.

As you touched on, the biggest problem is people being unable to remove their personal fanhood and biases in order to really consider why recruits go to certain schools. It's not that hard to understand, but every year we get into the weeds over the "unfathomable" reasons why Player X picked School Y instead of USC.

  • #2 Is extremely accurate with recruits these days.

  • Gonna have to go with the OP on this one and I'm not sure why there are people attacking him for his post. The only one I might take umbrage with would be #3...while I agree that HS coaches dont always put their kids best interests in mind and they usually are looking for a BBD...HS coaches develop relationships with college coaches and if they put their endorsement on a player and knowingly deceive college coaches to do so, they're going to burn bridges within the college coaching community, which isnt good for business, no matter what business you happen to be in. Im not saying that it doesnt happen but I'm not sure that its quite the problem you make it out to be. As their HS coach they are mentors and in some cases father figures so they certainly have influence, however I'm not sure you can generalize it rather than look at it on a case by case basis.
