Recruiting v Coaching

  • klimpson is an example of how recruiting can only get you so far. They have recruited as well as we have, yet the 'talent gap' appears to be very wide. Recruiting is fun to track, but players are good because of attitude and work ethic. Much of this attitude and work ethic is bred into the culture of the team through the coaching staff.

Look at Boise St. They are filled with 2* players, yet have one of, if not the best record in the country over the last 6 yrs. That includes victories over Ok and jawja. They also had 6 players drafted this draft.

Brad Scott recruited well here, yet was, and is, a total loser. Recruiting is just a piece of the puzzle.

  • No, they haven't recruited as well as we have. There rankings may put them there but overall they have not signed as many position players (line, dl, etc) as we have. They have signed some 5 star types that has raised there ratings, but overall they lack at a lot of positions.

  • Talent is superior to everything.

You can have a lot, but without talent you won't make it.

By talent I assume you mean those players our Staff chooses as opposed to star ratings

I think he does. All players with D1 offers are talented. Its the guys that come in and give their all to what the coaching staff asks of them.

There's a good correlation of high ratings and teams that win championships.

I pretty much agree with this sentiment. They have some elite talent at skill positions, but if you look at their signing classes since Dabo began there are a ton of misses on guys that were thought to be top level players.

I think that brings up a more important question: What is 'talent'?

Is talent how many stars you have coming out of high school, or is it how you perform once you get to college, and absorb college coaching?

  • Recruiting well don't mean squat if you can't evaluate very well. Yea tatertech recruits well, but who wants to recruit 5 star players that play like 2 star players and then not be able to coach them to play like 3 star players.

  • Teams can be competitive with talent and subpar coaching. Teams can be competitive with great coaching and average talent.

Teams that have both win championships.

We have the best combination of those ingredients in our history.

Our D line has changed its DNA and our O line is catching up fast.

    Plano

  • Yep. But you have to have both coaching and recruiting. Unfortunately, it's not one or the other.
