Ryan Lochte... gimmee a break.

  • If you're gonna talk the talk... you better walk the walk. I don't wanna hear any more of this BS in the media questioning who the greatest American swimmer is. Reminds me of when everyone hopped on that "Phil is better than Tiger" train. Had nearly a full second lead gift wrapped and handed to him by Phelps... then lost to France... FRANCE! That is like losing to a girl. C'mon dude... you're racing for America on a that relay team. Just gotta step up...

  • Do you follow swimming the other 1446 days every four years?

Actually, follow swimming quite a bit. My son was a swimmer in high school and a year round swimmer on a well recognized national swim club........Lochte will make this country proud before the games are over (already has with 1 gold metal).....This is the way swimming goes sometimes.....However, the media is the one doing most of this to Lochte....There very well may never be another Phelps......

  • No... It's the Olympics though. Thats when the great ones are supposed to rise to the occasion. Especially when you're handed a one second lead in ANYTHING. Even more so when you've been talking about how great you are for the last couple months. Don't even get me started on the basketball debate... To Kobe: "Michael Jordan at the PEAK OF HIS PRIME says hello." The way people repeatedly jump on unproven hype with everything now just continues to baffle me.

  • I agree.. he'll do well. But to try to continuosly prop yourself up over the greatest swimmer ever? Even when Phelps is clearly past his prime? You better bring it dude... In every single event you swim in. I guess I'm just expecting too much out of a Florida Gator though.

  • Actually, Australia was the pre-race favorite and should have won going away.....That is the way swimming goes especially in relay events..USA finished 2nd as most in the swimming world expected...

Not looking to start a major debate with you but 1 second in swimming is absolutely nothing with all that is taking place with the movement of both arms and both legs. You are talking about a blink and snap of the finger.....What America has become used to is Phelps winning by .008 seconds in the last olympcics. Try snapping your finger that fast....

He still had nearly a one second lead handed to him after Phelps and Adrian did much better than expected and blew away the field. Pre-race expectations get thrown out the window at that point. If you're the man... you close the deal. Especially against France, not Australia. Riddle me this... Let's pretend the shoe were on the other foot and it was Phelps swimming the anchor leg after Lochte blew everyone away and handed him a one second lead over France... Where do you think the USA would've been standing on the medal podium after that scenerio? When I hear someone say "It's my time now" and you're competing with the greatest athlete of all time in your sport still racing... I'm going to have higher expectations for. Otherwise... you're just another sh@t talking Gator.

Actually a full second is quite a bit in swimming sprints like that was. And I agree with the other poster about Lochte talking so much smack and then getting caught and passed like that. If I was Phelps I'd tell Lochte to win about 13 more gold medals and then give me a call.

And I'm not saying any of this in dickish way either...just fyi...it is an interesting debate. But it is basically a 100 meter race Lochte is running. Would a 1 second head start in a 100 meter sprint race not be a huge lead? I know Lezak basically overcame that much in 2008, but everyone was talking about what a miraculous, unimaginable, rally it was after he swam the race of his life. Could've just as easily said France choked... and they did. It was even more gratifying because of the junk they'd been talking. That's the French way... Talking junk and not backing it up. The American way is to back it up in the pool...or else don't go around running your mouth... which is my point about Lochte. Now I know he didn't have a picture of Phelps hanging in his locker talking about how he was going to destroy him like Chad Johnson would've done back in the day... But its swimming. His cocky demeanor, and some of the subtley brash comments he was making, were the swimming equivalent of a Chad Johnson interview. Except Ocho normally backed it up in his prime. I'm sure he'll have a great olympics btw... But it won't be anything that a good-to-great swimmer hasn't accomplished before in the games.

Found this in the Yahoo article covering the event...

"Adrian got the U.S. off to a fast start with a lead leg of 47.89 to put the Yanks in first. Then Phelps extended the advantage with a sizzling leg of 47.15. Cullen Jones in third held the lead and handed the gold to Lochte. He couldn’t hold on."

I think I saw somewhere that Lochte's time was two seconds off his personal best this year, but the link would'nt work.
Anyway... no other way to put it... Phelps rose to the occasion... Lochte choked. I know he destroyed Phelps in the 400 IM. But Phelps is not supposed to be winning every event, and has done nothing but try to temper expectations. Over the course of the past year or so... Lochte has gone out of his way to try to steal glory from one of the greatest American athletes we've ever seen... and that irritates me. You better back something like that up in every event you swim in. Personally, I think he over extended himself by trying to swim the 200 free prelims and the relay (which were only like an hour apart) in a laughable attempt to be something he's not (i.e. Michael Phelps).

Please add spoiler alert to the title. For the second straight night the race has been ruined for me. Maybe some other people that dont want to know will avoid this thread.

I don't follow it any of the 1460 days out of four years... 99.99999% could GAS. Yet we are supposed to care these two weeks? The Olympics are lame without the Cold War.

And no offense to crowclub or those that actually have a vested interest in olympic swimming.
