SC/CU OL Recruiting 2010-2013

  • We've recruited 17 OL compared to 10 in the upstate. 7 of ours have had a 90 or better 247 rating while only 2 of Clemson's were rated that high. If you drop that threshold to 88 we have 9 compared to 3 for the taters.

Honestly folks, do the taters have a plan here? I can't recall a team recruiting skill players at such a high level while utterly failing at OL.

  • Caldwell will right that ship, IMO, but it will be tough for them to overcome.

We've all seen how much poor OL recruiting from a numbers and talent perspective can hurt you. Shawn Elliott flat out gets it. You gotta recruit 4-5 every year with a mix of ones that look like they're going to be good and ones that are already good.

Caldwell ain't gon be around that much longer. Dat gon run him off when that OL can't get er done again. History shows I'm right

You're probably right. The sad part is he's probably the only guy who could make that group of scrubs serviceable. When we nearly hired him people were concerned about his recruiting. Seems that was a valid concern.

  • If I was a Clemson fan, this would concern me. They have married themselves to a gimmick offensive philosophy that puts great strain on their defense and OL. As long as those 2 units are very good, they can play that way. If either is below par or has a hard time, they better be able to win track meets. Maybe they can do that in the ACC. I know you can't do it for long in the SEC.

Caldwell has never coached in this kind of gimmick offense. He is caught between being back in his home state and coaching in an offense he doesn't like,

  • In no way do I mean to belittle the OP with this post, but I do want to add a little context. I believe the years are 2010-2012. Out of our 17, Duvon Milsap, Trammel Williams, Q McKinney, and (probably) Joe Harris either didn't qualify or left the program. So that leaves us with 13 OL recruits who will be on campus when fall practice starts from the past three years. I have no idea what clemson's attrition looks like, I'm sure they've had a couple too. Hopefully Harris makes it into school next year.

Having said that, that's why you have to recruit in numbers. You have to be ready for guys to not qualify, transfers, and injuries. We have done that the past three years. In two years we will probably be in a position where we can reload on the OL instead of rebuild. Give credit to Elliott, Spurrier, and Spurrier Jr (recruiting coordinator) for recognizing the need to do this and making it happen.

IMO the reason behind that is 0-lineman are usually very smart players usually the smartest on the team. clemsux is able to recruit the prima donna skill players cause they are promised playing time and are told they want get in trouble even if you beat your girl with a rod you are welcomed back on abuse awareness day. It has become known going to clemsux as a recruit you don't have to work hard you control the coaches and can do want you want. IMO that's why the taters are able to recruit top players who have attitude problems and usually don't work hard. The o-lineman are the smartest they don't fall for that BS hype. Look at the difference is the type of recruits we get compared to the taters like Lattimore to there Bellameme or Brandon Shell to there Spencer Region. Our recruits or players have there heads on straight while the taters are dealing with kids who expects things and wants things given to them.

  • Jamram, I didn't count Mckinney or Milsapp. I did count Williams, who had a low ranking of 80. Harris is a wash with the guy CU signed last year.

  • One thing that may factor into clemson's final product is that they have moved some linemen across the ball that a lot of programs had evaluated as ol.

I think they will turn out better than a lot of the guys Scott brought in as ol.

Caldwell given time should do a better job of spotting guys than Scott did. Still their ol figures to be a weakness they will have to scheme around for the next year or two.

Who did they move other than Gore? He's 260 pounds.

I don't see how their issues will be resolved in a year or two.

They moved Tyler Shatley to OG and he is likely going to be one of their starters

Gotcha. In that case, we aren't done for 2013. If Harris's situation plays out the way we have been told (hopefully prep), I can see us taking Park, King, Harris, and hopefully a guy like Crowder in 2013. 2014 will be interesting becuase we only have 1 senior OL next year in Ronald Patrick.

Nevertheless, I wholeheartedly agree with your original sentiment. Keep recruiting those OL.

A question I've always wondered is this: how many OL would you like to have on scholarship with an 85 man roster? For that matter, how would you break down your scholarship numbers for all positions?

Thanks. Sounds a bit desperate. You're right though, he's listed as a starter. Boyd may be lucky to make it out of the FSU game alive.

You want at the very least, 3-deep at every position. So that means, at the very least, 15 lineman on your roster. Ideally you want 4 at each line position, one from each class, so that when your senior graduates, the next guy is now a senior and he's a stud.

.Yeah, I remember Lou wanted 18 on the roster at all times.
