SEC AND BIG 12 CHAMPIONS TO MEET IN POST-SEASON BOWL GAME

  • (Release from SEC headquarters)

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (May 18, 2012) – The Southeastern Conference and the Big 12 Conference announced today a five-year agreement for their football champions to meet in a post-season bowl game following the 2014 season.

The champions of the two conferences will be in the matchup unless one or both are selected to play in the new four-team model to determine the national championship. Should that occur, another deserving team from the conference(s) would be selected for the game.

“A new January bowl tradition is born,” said SEC Commissioner Mike Slive. “This new game will provide a great match-up between the two most successful conferences in the BCS era and will complement the exciting post-season atmosphere created by the new four-team model. Most importantly, it will provide our student-athletes, coaches and fans with an outstanding bowl experience.”

“Our goal is to provide the fans across the country with a New Year’s Day prime-time tradition,” commented acting Big 12 Conference Commissioner Chuck Neinas. “This is a landmark agreement between two of the most successful football conferences during the BCS era to stage a post-season event. The creation of this game featuring the champions of the Big 12 and SEC will have tremendous resonance in college football.”

“I am very excited by the prospects for a game between our champion and the champion of the Southeastern Conference,” added in-coming Big 12 Conference Commissioner Bob Bowlsby.

During the 14-year history of the Bowl Championship Series the Big 12 and SEC lead the nation with 11 seasons in which each conference has had at least one team ranked in the top four of the final BCS standings. Both conferences share the top spot all-time with 14 teams each that have finished in the top four of the final BCS Standings. The two conferences have combined for 16 appearances in the BCS National Championship Game, with the Big 12 ranking second behind the SEC’s nine appearances with seven trips to the National Championship Game.

The two league champions have met twice in BCS bowl games since 1998, both in BCS National Championship Games. In 2010, Alabama defeated Texas, 37-21, in Pasadena, Cal., and in 2009, Florida defeated Oklahoma, 24-14, in Miami, Fla.

Specific details, including host site(s), will be announced at a later date.

  • So it's pretty much the Cotton bowl moving in front of the Capital One Bowl. I wonder if one of the lesser bowl tie ins will be eliminated or if this is in addition to.

  • Is the proposed playoff system replacing all BCS bowls? If not, the meeting of conference champions will most likely never take place. At least one of the champs will most likely be in the playoff and if not, they would almost certainly be in a BCS game. One more thing, where will it be played? Most likely Texas every year? If that's the case, expect the SEC West teams to be selected most years if no champion available. Or, they could use existing bowls to rotate the agreement.

Just sounds like a decent sized bowl added to our conferences is all. Has nothing to do with the Cotton bowl or any other bowl unless one of the meaningless bowls pulls out because of this.

I do wonder if this will affect the SEC's Sugar Bowl tie in.

  • One thing this deal means is that the ACC is getting left even further behind in the pecking order. The PAC 12 and Big 10 have the Rose Bowl and the SEC and Big 12 have this bowl. The ACC is staring down a Big East bowl partnership at best.

  • The two champs will never meet w a four team playoff. If I can find the time I'll do a hypothetical model for the last ten years. Pretty sure SEC champ was playing for all the marbles or in top 4.

  • I like Slive saying a new bowl tradition is born. Slap at the Rose imo.

In related news I'm hearing rumors the ACC is trying to partner with the Shrine Bowl.

  • I think it's genius. It sets up that bowl game to be the #1 bowl that's not in the playoff system. And guarantees the Pac12 and the also rans are left thinking "damn, wish we thought of that..."

More publicity which means more eyes on screens which means more negotiating leverage with TV contracts. Genius business move.

  • This is great too because it sends a message to all the lesser conferences (cough cough ACC) who are pushing for ONLY conference champs to be in the 4-team playoff bracket.

Another proactive move by the SEC. All the lesser conferences, like the E-Z-Z, can only be reactive due to their cream puff teams.

This is what it would have looked like going back to 1998:

1998: Tennessee, Florida St, K St, Ohio St
1999: Florida St, VT, Nebraska, Alabama
    2000: Oklahoma, FSU, Miami, Washington
    2001: Miami, Nebraska, Colorado, Oregon
2002: Miami, Ohio St, Georgia, So Cal
2003: Oklahoma, LSU, So Cal, Michigan
2004: So Cal, Oklahoma, Auburn, Texas
2005: So Cal, Texas, Penn St, Ohio St
2006: Ohio St, Florida, Michigan, LSU
2007: Ohio St, LSU, VT, Oklahoma
    2008: Oklahoma, Florida, Texas, Alabama
    2009: Alabama, Texas, Cincinnati, TCU
    2010: Auburn, Oregon, TCU, Stanford
2011: LSU, Alabama, Okla St, Stanford

Every year at least one champ would have been in the top 4.

This - a smart move for sure. Obviously the commish's expect their top teams to be in the 4 team playoff, and this sets up a great game with the top teams who don't make it. For example, if for some stupid reason they vote to only allow conf champs in the playoff, then last year this game has Bama. Pretty sure a few years back a Big 12 team also played in the MNC game and didn't even play in the Big 12 champ game. It's a great move and also a fall back if the vote goes in a stupid direction.

You gottit...and the SEC needs only 2 which they may rob from the B!2...not likely but who knows...I'm still lookin NCS and a Va team

  • Great move by Slive...if nothing else than to counter the Rose Bowl. With this alliance we could tell the Big 10 to shove it where the sun does not shine....play the Big 12 champion and claim the NC.

IMO this was a move to force Delaney to come to our table.

Thanks joe and that's what I thought. That makes it even more interesting because you KNOW these guys did the same modeling.
