SEC East vs West (hypothetical)

  • i'm glad we may finally be dropping Arky, but picking up TxAM is basically the same for fans wanting to travel

here is my format to match up permanent opponents. it still keeps those traditional cross-division rivalries, and is also more logical distance-wise

    Tenn - Bama (rivalry)
    UGA - Aub (rivalry)
    UF - LSU (not a rivalry, but a good match-up since 1992)
Vandy - Arky (more logical from a distance perspective)
UK - Ole Miss (who cares)
Mizzou - TxAM (the "newbies" can continue playing each other from the Big XII days... could possibly create a new rivalry)

USC - Miss St (former SECW permanent opponent when we played 2 each year... many times playing them have been very good games.... much more logical distance-wise)

    thoughts??

True. But who really wants to go to Starkvegas?

    Kelso Red

  • I'd rather have a "name" opponent like Texas A& M rather than MSU... also, College Station is only an hour or so northwest of Houston Intercontinental... If you are going to fly, it's not a bad trip... If you are going to drive... ugh.

  • I believe we are gong to add 2 more teams this summer when all the expansion dominoes start to fall, beginning with FSU>Big 12. That will give us 16 teams & I believe & have read that is what Slive ultimately wants.

2 more teams (let's say Va Tech & NCST) will give us that 16 team conference & we will go to 4 4-team divisions, creating a Final 4 with the Division winners & adding 2 more "cash cow" games in form of semi-finals in venues like Dallas,STL, KC, FL, Charlotte, DC, TN, etc with trhe traditional Championship Game in Atlanta.

The beauty in this format is that every team has a better chance to win the conf only having 4 teams per division. The format i saw from a very credible source close to Slive & all things SEC is as follows:
    * Continuation of 8 game conf schedule with 4 home & 4 away
    * Each team will play all 3 teams in their division, alternating home fields every other yr
    * each team will have 2 permanent cross-divisional opponents each year, alternatng home fields every other yr (this is to protect the old rivalries i.e UF/UT, Bama/UT, Uga/Auburn, LSU/Bama, UF,UGA)
    - I can tell you the format I saw had USC's permanent cross-division opponents as Arky & Vandy
    * Then, to comprise the rest of the 8 game conf schedule each team will play 1 team from each of the other 3
divisions. Instead of a 2 yr home & home tho', these teams would only rotate on the schedule for 1 yr & the next
time the 2 teams meet, the game will be played at the opposite school's field from the last meeting.
    * The rally cool thing, because of the 1 yr rotation of the 3 cross-division games, each team will play every team
in the conference in a 3yr period. That is alot sooner than they see each other between rotations as things stand
now with the 2yr home & home rotation, except it will consists of 4 more teams.

    The proposed divisions:
    * SEC East: Florida, South Carolina, Va Tech & NC State
    * SEC Central: Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky & Vanderbilt
    * SEC South: Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss & Miss State
    * SEC West: LSU, Texas A&M, Arkansas & Missouri

SEC East Champ vs SEC Central Champ / SEC West Champ vs SEC South Champ
    - These games were said to either be in Dallas,TX & Atlanta, Ga every yr or rotating sites every yr ( KC, TB, CHR, DC, ORL, NSH, MEM, NO) for the semi-final games and either keeping the Championship Game in Atl or rotating the Champ Game between Atl & Dal

The SEC Championship's "Final 4" could match up same div champs every yr or seed it 1 vs 4 / /2 vs 3

I think this would be awesome & add a ton of revenue. We already know how much is made from the Championship Game & I would think a conservative guess of what the 2 semi-final games would bring in would probably be 50million between the 2.

    Thoughts?

I think I suggested something very similar recently, so I kind of like this idea. But many others were less enthusiastic, from what I recall.

  • To me ole miss would make sense. The thank goodness for Mississippi bowl...

Tamu to me is just as dangerous if not more dangerous than Arkansas. I don't think we get much of a break there.

But whatever we get we will play.

To do that, the NCAA has to grant the league a waiver to play the semifinals.

  • Picking up A&M is going to suck in a couple of years. With their recruiting base, I think they will become a powerhouse program now that they are in the SEC. Gives them ammo to take recruits from UT and okie. Look at the current recruiting rankings....already paying dividends it seems.

  • From a pure fan perspective the road to a championship would be awful. Can you imagin having to go to 4 different playoff game venues to follow your team? The 2 for the SEC championship and then 2 for a BCS championship. Honestly this makes it less appealing to me.

I like the idea. However, I'd switch out Florida and Kentucky. Florida, UGA, and UT will all be in the same division with one around for the sake of tradition and what not, just using the excuse they'd come up with.

Cockymike1, you are mistaken. Starkville and Fayetteville are almost 500 miles apart. I live in Memphis and have been to both. You are looking at an additional 5-6 hours to get to Fayetteville over Starkville from Darlington.
