Watkins Ford Kelly Stuckey Currie Hamilton

Not to mention a few players on the team now who could start for us.

Watkins is the only player on that list that can hang with Alshon, Kenny and Sidney

    DL Moore and Smith? Really?

All of those guys but Kelly and Watkins were drafted. Kelly signed briefly and Watkins will be drafted.

If getting to the NFL and running up a lot of yards in college doesn't make you a good WR, what does?

It really is sad that you consider yourself gamecock fan, tater. Name me on WR since Dabo has been there that has made an impact in the league. You cant, because there arent any. Quit bitching because you dont like the fact that Jr. is SOSs son. He is the best WR coach we have ever had, has brought in more talent than any other WR coach ever has, and has produced the best statistical players we have ever had/ Jr. is one of the best in the business.

If you watch Arkansas, their receivers were not wide open on most of the balls completed.

I'm sorry, this is just not correct. Bobby Petrino is/was a mastermind at exploiting mismatches with his WRs and getting them the ball in space where they can run after the catch. I made a fool of myself yelling at the TV these past few years watching their WRs and TEs run free against our defense.

Exhibit A: our game vs. them this past year, Joe Adams (I believe, could've been Jarius Wright or any of their other speed demons) got matched up on D. Jeffery and got behind him by a couple steps for a long TD. Very much wide open.

Exhibit B: our game vs. them 2 years ago in Fayatteville, the play right before halftime, Mallet hits their TE wide open running across the field and they get a huge gainer and either score a TD or FG right before the half. Nobody was close to him on that play either that I can recall.

Steve, for you I'll make a thread in the next few days explaining my thoughts on JR. I'll include stats, comparisons, and plenty of facts on why I came to that conclusion. I'll even include why I brought up Dabo.

It will probably be lengthy and boring.

RMC can join in as well.

Hopefully it will explain some things and people who actually read it will think "oh well that makes sense" but it will probably mostly lead to people calling me a hater and mentioning Sidney.

Clemson is a passing offense. They had Sammy and Hopkins last year, two good receivers. If Gurley was not dumb, we would have had Gurley and Alshon and Ace as our starters. That would have been a solid group, no?

Also, if you credit the receivers to their recruiter of record, you are criticizing Jr for not having good receivers in his recruiting area. That is a flawed argument.

Facts are, we have good receivers. You cannot tell me that other schools would not have given Ace, Bruce, KJ, Shamiere, Damiere, Fuller, Kwinton and all them scholarships. We have a young group. One of the best 3 receivers to ever play at USC just left for the NFL. 3 of the best EVER to play at USC have played under Bubba. That is the one and only argument.

Also, last year, Ace, and Bruce were open, they were open, they were open. Shaw did not understand when to throw it. Against Nebraska, he missed his window several times, and had to take off. He was confused all year by zone coverage. They were putting a guy in man on Alshon, and dropping 7 back in zone a lot, and it confused him. He was in his first year as a starter. This year, all of the sudden, our receivers are going to be open. It will be like magic.

You are naming one instance. In general, they would hit their receivers in tight windows quite a bit. Of course they are going to run wide open a couple of times. Those plays are easy to remember, because of the situation. I was saying look at Arkansas' season. They hit receivers in tight windows. It's all timing, and Shaw had those a lot, and missed his window.

Your frustration can color your perception in games like that. Ellis's zone schemes were absolute crap against teams like Arkansas. Alshon was not open quite a bit last year, because he was doubled all the time, but the secondary guys were open.

Also Derrick Hamilton went in the 2004 draft and Currie in the 2005 draft and never played against the Spurrier staff. So it covers a longer time period.

Dabo arrived in Clemson in 2003, and here, I think is a complete list of Wrs they've signed since he arrived:

    Ladonte Harris
    Aaron Kelley
    Andrew Diomande

    Jeff Ogren
    Kendrick Johnson
    Jacoby Ford

Tyler Grisham (the best example of a good scout, or good coaching job and oddly not mentioned at all)
    Rendrick Taylor
    TJ Williams

    Brandon Clear
    Xavier Dye
    Markish Jones

    Jaron Brown
    Brandon Ford
    Marquan Jones

    Bryce McNeal

    Joe Craig
    Deandre Hopkins
    Martavis Bryant

    Sammy Watkins
    Seckinger
    Charone peak
    Martavis Bryant (again)

So of the list Dabo had nothing to do at all with the recruitment of Hamilton, Currie, or Stuckey.

And the great majority of the players he recruited since he arrived at Clemson did little.

Of course that is exactly what you would expect in recruiting. However, were some of us Clemson fans instead of South Carolina fans they would have been up in arms about the poor development of Xavier Dye, like he was actually a player capable of doing better. Or complaining that he recruited Jeff Ogren.

Point of fact, Clemson fans did and do continue to complain about this stuff.

In fact, one of the biggest crticisms of Dabo last year was that he took so long to bench the all the experienced WRs on the team who were busts in favor of younger players. Essentially, that he had done such a poor job of recruiting WRs that they were mad that he was playing them ahead of what fans felt were better young players.

    Go figure.

Seriously- Mallet was 27 of 30 against us in Arky. We to believe he threaded 20+ needles that afternoon? Come on man.

I have heard all of those reasons from you before and I still believe you should be classified as a JR hater. You tend to hate on many coaches for random reasons.

I don't believe JR is an elite coach but IMO, I believe that he is a good WR coach and have no reason to believe otherwise. Your logic on JR is faulty at best which is why you are considered a JR haterand rightfully so.

No, the facts are we have alot of WRs who are unproven to date.

Ace has 54 career catches and 4 TD in 2 years at South Carolina (27 games, so he's averaging 2 rec/gm). Ellington has 17 catches and 1 TD in his 1 year of playing football. Damiere Byrd is credited with 1 rec for 16 yards for the entire 13 game season in 2011 on ESPN.com. The rest of those guys have yet to play a down, so you can't automatically say they are good just because they had a nice offer sheet coming out of HS. So did OJ Murdock, Chris Culliver, Carlos Thomas, Joe Hills, etc.and you see how they turned out at the WR position for us.

For the record, I am not saying our WRs are bad or SOS Jr. is a bad coach or anything like that. I just don't see how anyone can look at the position and automatically assume it's going to be a position of strength based on what has been proven on the field to date.

  • I mean seriously, there are clemson fans who will go on for days about Dabo's evaluations and tendency for offering WRs who cannot contribute. I've seen his evaluations referred to as "self imposed probation."

I agree with you that the WR position is a question mark.

On the other hand, I do not think someone can look at last year's receptions and presume that it will be a weakness. likely to be somewhere in between.

If the recruiting analysts and college recruiters are correct there is talent in Ace Sanders, Damiere Byrd, KJ Brent, Shamir Jeffery, Kwinton Smith, Jody Fuller, and Shaq Roland.

We will see. I think we will probably have another run heavy, conservative offense this season and we will probably have some guys step up and make some catches.

But this group is probably not oging to be be as good this coming year as they will the following year.

Past experience here seems to suggest it takes WRs about a half year of playing time to settle in and perfect the things they need to perfect to be effective.

They will have to find the primary guys and then those guys should improve with reps.

  • We will find out this year how good our receivers are because we do not have one superstar receiver that will be constantly throwing it to. We will probably run it way way more than we even throw it this year.
