Saturday morning discussion topic.....

  • I was reading the Marlon Humphrey thread below and some people said that South Carolina shouldn't recruit him at all because there was no way they could pull him out of Alabama.

I'm not going to argue that point but it got me thinking, if Saban ups and decides to head back to the NFL (say Dallas) who would Alabama hire? Of course its all hypothetical but I seriously can't see any other coach out there that can run a program like Saban that they can land.

I don't even have any names to toss out. Meyer is not leaving Ohio State, I don't see Chip Kelley leaving the Eagles so quickly, don't see Bama wanting Les Miles.

Maybe Will Muschamp? Would you hand it over to Kirby Smart? Kevin Stalin? I'm sure Dabo would be camped out at the office trying for the job.

Just something to bounce around this morning with no football or Gamecock basketball to do.

  • I think they would actually give Dabo a look

  • Good point about Saban leaving for the NFL. If he does, I'm thinking Kirby Smart.

    Spurrier...I appreciate him plenty

Nah, Dabo's act appeals to 18 year old kids. Can't see Bama's AD falling for it.

  • Gary Patterson may actually listen to Bama.

  • How about Charlie Strong. Just saying... The win over UF in the Sugar bolted his resume to the top IMO.

  • I think their best option would be to promote from within

The real USC is the one that didn't finish in the top 25. The real Carolina is Academic Fraud U. South Carolina back to back Top 10. Got it.

  • great question. The first person I thought of was Les, but you are probably right in that they don't want him. There's really no one out there. You could give it to kirby smart, but he's never been a head coach anywhere so I doubt that entrust their program to a first time head coach. With that said, two names pop out. David Shaw, head coach out of Stanford. The program didn't miss a beat when Harbaugh left and they've been recruiting down south. Frank Beamer, head coach of VT. I understand he's entrenched at VT, but thats because outside of last season, he's had consistent winners. He's the only guy I can think of off the top of my head with enough head coach experience to not be buried under the pressure of winning fast.

But i just thought of something. If they want an NFL guy, Jon Gruden. Alabama is the best gig in the nation, college or otherwise. Why not?

  • There is not two more contrasting styles in football than Saban and Dabo. I just can't see Bama making that move. Plus, Dabo sucks as a coach. Maybe they would look at The Chad first.

  • Given their style of play, I'd see them targeting someone who runs a similar smashmouth system. Shaw from Stanford fits the bill but I don't see a west coast guy in Bama. Shiano fits the style, not sure about the cultural fit though. Maybe O'Brien from PSU.

  • Obviously as long as saban is at bama they will be among the elite in the sec...now we've seen where the program can go when they make bad hires..sooo the next topic (almost similar discussion) is what happens when sos retires, do we go for an established homerun hire, an assistant internally or externally, head coach at a small school? We make a wrong hire (ie Dooley to Tenn) we will return to 7-5

Do you believe we're destined to return to 5-loss seasons irrespective of who we hire?

  • If I was a bama fan I would probably want Kirby Smart. I would try to keep the rest of the staff intact as much as possible. No way they would go after Dabo as I would think they are too football smart to do that.

    madcock

  • I think they go after Gruden or Cowher hard. Maybe O'brien, the Stanford coach or Patterson.

Absolutely not. But no program is immune to mediocraty with a bad hire, bama had shula, tenn Dooley, uf with zook ..it took those programs years to recover (if yet) and a great hire to start winning again. That's what I'm concerned about, we have great momentum and it could change with a bad hire

  • The more I think about it, the more I'd say O'brien. Like Saban he's a Belichick disciple.

Agreed. But it all depends on where the program is. If we start winning SEC Championships, then you'd almost have to go with a homerun hire. If we stay where we are, then Elliot or Mangus would be a good option.

Agree on each point you raise.

  • No way he leaves for the NFL. They're building new facilities and would pay any amount to keep him. Plus Saban loves winning. The Cowboys job would change that.

We're talking 4-5 years down the road. Coaching pool will be very different then, so it's impossible to say. Unless we win the BCS title, Spurrier will be around that long. We'll have a Sugar Bowl win under belt IMO. We'll be one of the top programs open in whichever yr HBC steps down. Too hard to say who we hire at that point.

This^^ would you have believe if someone would have told you that Kelly would be the Eagles new HC? What he has accomplished while at Oregon was impressive.. I have a heard time thinking it will translate in the NFL. He will regret walking away from that gold mine IMO.. if the NCAA doesn't eventually bust them for fractions under his era. One year of the carousel is enough to boggle the mind but 4-5 years down the road is a complete unknown in college football.

I think Smart thinks there is a good chance he takes over. He has been the hot name for two off seasons and has looked around some but seemed like he backed away from some jobs(AU). I don't know if I would give him the keys or go after someone like O Brian from PSU. I tend to think Bama isn't the place for on the job training and would go after someone like O Brian, Peterson, Patterson or maybe even Goldon (I think he's done we'll in a bad situation)

    Didn't mean to quote joe.
