Should Brandon Wilds get a look at full back?

  • Wilds is a RB

I remember him saying last year " I'm a RB and I'm proving it "

IMO Miles is a great kid and I'm glad he stayed . You can never have to man great kids like Kenny Miles who aren't flashy but get the job done. However he isn't more talented than Wilds

Carson hasn't really proved a thing yet . He looks good and is a change of pace . Still has he proved it playing Florida?

Davis is more talented than all of them... But wheres his head at? Is he dedicated? I'm not cracking on his character I just simply have no idea and that's a big deal.

Latrimore has to come back and be the same player. I think he will just saying

Wilds is important to this team at RB

if carson and lattimore dont come back 100% then obviously wilds should stay at rb. i dont think anyone would argue with you on that.

agreed on mike davis. not a shot at him. but i wouldnt argue moving a guy like wilds because of a player who hasnt even had a practice yet.

  • He will transfer really fast if he is not left as a running back.

  • How in the world have we seen his ceiling? I'm convinced that wilds can and will get better. He's a beast in the weight room and will continue to get stronger and better physically. There's lots of room for improvement.

  • a full backs yardage expectations are 1-5 at best. basically a 3rd down power back. I'm not at all saying the kid is not athletic but do i think he is in the top 4? no. miles is coming back for a reason and him and the coaches have obviously talked about his roll, my whole point was either redshirt or get into a role where he can get on the field. i saw the florida game, i saw the tennessee game... di you ever think that maybe the o line was giving him 5-6 yards at a time, its a running backs job to hit the holes hard. and when the holes are there... you're SUPPOSED to get those yards, what I'm trying to get across is not negative about the kid. but while he was picking up yards, he dfinately left yards on the field. i understand he was a freshman, and thats all well and good, my main point was he is not a #1 back for Carolina given the talent we have. not now.. in a few years.. maybe, but with davis coming in and latt likely to stay for his senior year...i don't understand that down votes on what I'm saying. go look at the film. how many tackles did he break and go for more yardage that what was expected? and florida and tennessee? really?its been 3 years since their defense could stop a decent offense. I'm not hating on the man, just looking at the reality of it all.

Come on man! He rushed for 486 with a 4.5 yard per carry average against SEC teams as a FRESHMAN! Yet you used words like not impressive, scared, and shy'd in your description. Terrible, absolutely terrible assessment IMHO!

on the opening drive against clemson he fell over a tackle rather than attempting to get by it, there's a reason spurrier put miles in and kept him in, miles went hard, every play, drove his legs and broke tackles. once again, I'm not saying the kid is a bad back, just given what is in front of him in the depth chart, either take a redshirt or work into the full back position

Do we still use a fullback? If so, not much.

we didn't use a full back after coffee got hurt the same night as marcus because we didn't have a decent one.

  • I think IF he is going to be 3rd string or lower and doesn't want to redshirt then he should get a look at fullback. Not knocking what he did last year. However given his size and ability the offense could be better having a fullback that can run the ball, catch it out of the backfield, and have to be accounted for as a weapon by the defense. It would open things up with our unproven receivers. You know teams are going to stack the box and focus on Marcus and shaw.

Do or do not, there is no try

He cant really improve his speed or cutting ability, which are good but not great. he can get bigger, but how much? 10-15 pounds are so until he starts losing the speed and cutting ability?

Please dont go crazy with this and act like im saying he's not good. he obviously is. just saying the things players usually improve on during their college careers like being football savvy, being comfortable on the field, comfortable with the plays and assignments, pass catching skills, and having a physical, tough attitude, he's already got in spades.

    You have lost your mind.

Just about all RB's get better every year in college. Why would Wilds be the expection*? You must have not been a Gamecock fan last season when he was our RB. If it wasn't for him we don't get to 11wins.

He is a RB PERIOD. He WILL GET BETTER EVERY YEAR, just like any other RB would. RB can add weight and not lose speed or cutting ability. We pay strength coaches a lot of money to keep them from doing this.

So all those reports about Kenny having the best offseason of his career and getting bigger and looking (and testing) faster than ever are just bogus??? He is the same RB that he was 4years ago when he walked on campus???

    H*ll NO!!

  • I'm just thrilled that we've recruited well enough for this thread to exist. How our backfield (for that matter, the entire team) responded last year after Lattimore went down left me speechless. In the happy sort of way!

he should be willing to do whatever is best for the team. he proved he was a good filler. his speed was not impressive and he looked scared at times and shy'd away from hits. if he wants to see the field this season, baring some freak injuries again, i would think fullback would be perfect for him until he can develop more. or use the redshirt. not saying he's a bad back at all but i just saw things in him last season that could prevent him from being able to compete for a spot after marcus leaves. i think at full back it would allow us to expand the use of the position. Triple option anyone? conner's prother ran it to perfection, I'm sure he knows a thin or 2 about it.

I must have been watching different games than you. Running backs try to get away from defenders, they don't try to get hit. If putting moves on defenders qualifies as shying away from hits, then Marcus would be guilty as well. I also never saw him scared. Maybe I was interpreting things wrong, I did not see that.

I think you will see Clowney at QB before we run the triple option. I see your thinking there, but Shaw's talents are in throwing the ball, and running to keep the defense panicking.

I've already received enough down votes for this but i don't care, lol. there was a particular play against clemson when a defender "kind of tried to tackle him" , fell in front of them and he just fell over, maybe he was anticipating the hit, maybe he was going too full head of steam to make a jump or juke, i just think he has a lot of work to do before we can ,as fans, assume he's our number 2 back, with the way miles ran the last few games i don't think its logical or fair to put wilds up there with him, even with the catching the balls out of the back field, he had a near 20 yard run, got it called back, and the very next play went out and made up that yardage and got the first. brandon wilds is not a BAD BACK....at all.. but he's not our #2 and unless he's improved a lot this off season with his decision making he either needs to redshirt or accept a fullback position. and as far as clowned being our QB before we try and run the triple option....pfft..... shaw's talents throwing the football against a competitive SEC have yet to be shown. stats wise. not saying the kid can't do it. but...

work with me. every time bruce comes into the wildcat.. you KNOW he's carrying the ball. besides a couple of passes(one in particular to lattimore...miss state game, right before the injury if I'm not mistaken.) he runs the ball every time. to mix it up and throw wilds in there with lattimore w/ bruce in a triple option wildcat could work wonders for the offense. maybe its caused i watched every game and studied it more than the other coaches around the league but every time i saw bruce in there i would've collapsed on the ball with my D. and even if you run a power I with wilds as a fullback you can have him blocking or flanking out to catch a pass while you still have your #1 and #2 back in there as a threat. if that would keep the defense thinking and panicking then i dunno what would. or hell even set him in at tight end to get their gears working.

    TheJohnWatts

  • I'll give you Kenny miles as he has looked better this spring than at any point that I can remember.

Not saying he won't improve some. But he's more or less the player he will be physically IMO. And there are a lot of players out there like that.

Scared? Really? An NFL scout, after watching him run, stated that he felt Wilds had NFL potential as a running back.

Scared? Really? If this is true then he would not want to play FB. After all, the FB does a lot of blocking... hence, he hits people.

    Scared? Really?
