Sorry, another Bryce Harper thread, but....

  • Not a douche for drilling him. Although a good brush back would have sent the same message. He's a dumbazz for TALKING about it and a douche for allowing the guy to steal home on him in the same inning. The basic text was:
"Screw you rookie. Here one in the back."
"Thank you sir may I have another? After I steal home on your veteran ass of course."

ever think part of that is him being overshadowed by Lee and Hallday?

also Hamels is the young stud of the staff just hitting his prime his numbers have improved every year hes been in the bigs with the exception of 2009, if you put up and ERA around 3 or less with around 200ks you will find yourself being talked about as a cy candidate more often than not. I don't have any problem at all with him sending a message he would be #1 on a lot of teams in this league. I'm a Braves fan and the only pitcher I wouldn't trade for Hamels is Tommy Hanson

By definition a "perennial Cy Young candidate" should never be over shadowed by another pitcher on his team.

I'd take him as the #2 guy on the Braves today but I would not trade Hanson, Beachy or Teheran for him. The Phillies would never take Hudson for him. That leaves Minor and Delgado as bait if you want to deal pitching. Given he is in a contract year the Phillies would probably take Minor or Delgado with another position player or two and save the cash. The Braves however would never shell out the cash so that would be a complete waste.

Back to the "perennial Cy Young candidate" discussion, let's play a little game. I'll give you stats for two pitchers and you tell me who each guy is and if they would be your ace. Do keep in mind the stats are from age 22 - 27 to provide a fair comparison.

    Pitcher A -
    .....Record - 72 - 52
    .....ERA - 3.23
    .....Starts - 182
    .....IP - 1,115
    .....WHIP - 1.13
    .....K/9 - 8.73

    Pitcher B -
    .....Record - 74 - 54
    .....ERA - 3.39
    .....Starts - 181
    .....IP - 1,159
    .....WHIP - 1.14
    .....K/9 - 8.46

The stats are almost identical. Both pitchers were never the ace of their staff, never led the league in any stat, both were two time All-Stars and while both got votes for Cy Young neither ever finished higher than 6th. Can you name the other pitcher?

  • If contracts were the same or you controlled the player for the same time Hammels is much better than Hanson. Hamels has made 28 or more starts since his rookie year and doesnt have injury concerns like Hanson. Hanson shoulder is a major concern going forward and has lost velo since last year. Hamels is what the Braves hope their young pitching becomes.

  • Hameltoe=douche. past, now, and to continue.

  • I used to consider myself old school when it comes to baseball, but what Hamels did makes me question my stance on it if his is the "new old school". If someone hits a dinger off of me, expect to get one high and tight at his next at bat.If my team is losing 12-2 in the bottom of the 8th and he steals or attempts to steal a base on me, fully expect to get plunked below the head at your next at bat even if it doesn't happen in that same game. But just to throw at a kid cause he's a rookie and he didn't provoke the beaning, just shows a lack of class. Then to talk about it like it was an accomplishment demonstrates he ain't old school after all, but does readily qualify himself as a double douche. Talk about stupid!

obviously one is hammels and I will go with Smoltz as the other pitcher.

I would take Hammels any day. of course i am a cubs fan though

  • Not Smoltz and amazingly the record are not nearly the same. Smoltz brok out at 29 and while there is a chance for Hamels to break out that late most pitchers are dominate before 29 if they are going to win the Cy Young.

    Smoltz -
    .....Record - 76 - 68
    .....ERA - 3.49
    .....Starts - 190
    .....IP - 1,291
    .....WHIP - 1.21
    .....K/9 - 7.11

since I am the only one playing, can I get AL or NL?

    @therealmacklin

  • NL, I'll even give you the time frame... 1985 - 1990

  • Shockingly it is Sid Fernandez. The number three guy behind staff ace Dwight Gooden and 1984 rookie of the year Ron Darling.

Yeah, I don't think Harper is a punk. When asked about Hamels hitting him, he said 'Hamels is a great pitcher, and a good guy'. Harper is handling this better than everyone else is, and he is 19.

I have looked for evidence of showboating or cockiness, and I have not seen any. The guy hustles and plays hard, and is enthusiastic, but just goes to his teammates when he is excited. The guy seems like he gets it, as far as how you are supposed to act in baseball.

There is nothing wrong with the way Harper plays or acts, that I have seen. He is going to be a star, and really quick. He is handling it better than most would.

    agreed
I have not seen Bh play much before sunday night but assume those that hate him are just haters
