KJ Brent has the height, leaping ability and hands to go up and catch the ball on a fade or jump ball route. He catches just about everything and uses his hands. The OL was NOT the problem against UF. 4 TOs, a blocked FG that reveresed some momentum, and poor onside kick coverage resulted in 5 short-field scores, which the OL had NO part of. We actually moved the ball relatively well in the first half before we go down by 21-3. It was also a mistake to not go back to Connor in the 2nd half.
IMO, Shaw's not a throw it all around and win the game on his arm type QB. He is a gamer tho, i'll say it again junk that spread crap and get back to the basics of the Iformation pound the rock use motiple TE sets, they seem to be the best pass catchers we have. Run playaction from different Iformation sets, Shaw will have time if they want him to use his legs run some naked boots. Every team in colleage knows what LSU is gonna do and yet they still go out and make it happen year in and year out. Iformation pound pound pound the rock until they break ur wil. SC has more talent offensevilly but i dont see them feeling like they know they're going to take control of a game like the heavy weights in the west. As far as the recievers their doesnt seem to be much faith their, the Oline gets shuffled every week it seems however the same receivers fail to make plays and yet they still manage to log most of the snaps. If u have a senior not playing at the level he should and u have freshmen learning I say u go with the freshmen players. Im sure KJ Brett, Shameir Jeffery Kwinton Smith or Roland cant do any worst than DL has performed this year and if they do chalk it up to learning on the fly it seems DL has reached his ceiling and can go no higher. But on the bright side of things look at how far SC football has come, we dropped two games againts LSU and FLA and the whole state is shocked. Gotta thank Spurrier for bringing us this far and Im sure the HBC's not done with us yet.
i agree DL has maxed out on potential. Time to give the younger guys a chance to prove they cant play at this level he had four yrs and he's proved it every yr.
Jeffery, Brett, Roland, Adams and or Smith. its time to give these guys a shot. If they drop em so be it. DL did for four yrs.
Kind of makes me wonder why KJ hasn't been given a chance also. They've raved about the kid for 2 years and in the same breath say we lack a ''tall'' WR.
it's never as bad as it seems .... or never as good as it seems.
Take away the turnovers (Fla got 28 pts off less that 40 yds in drives due to our turnovers), and this is a much loser game than you'd think. I thought we matched up better with Fla than LSU even thouh the score surely doesn't show it.
Tennersee has an average defense. They are playing at our place. We simply cannot have turnovers AND we must attack them.
Shaw is our best chance to win the game. Thompson gets so jazzed up when he enters the game, his accuracy is way off. It's the 3rd possession or so before he calms down enough to hit his receivers. He does give us the better downfield passing game but ..... is also a much higher risk for negative yardage plays. Shaw can beat Tennersee and beat them handily. He's got to read their defense and pass when they load the box ...... run when they don't. He's an accurate enough passer to hurt them badly. Our TE's can gash them and we've got to use that mismatch to our advantage. We can run on them. But until they tire, I don't think we can just line up and run it down their throats. I wish we could but I don't think so. Like I said when they load the box ...... pass. WHen they drop in coverage ..... run.
I am concerned about their tall (and fast) WR's. Bray may be a head case but if we give him time, he will hurt us with the pass. Clowney and Taylor and hopefully Quarles will be back from suspension / shoulder injury need to put Bray's hair on fire. We simply cannot give him time to throw. They have a decent run game but nothing we haven't seen and stopped already (Fla or UGA). Their OL has not given up many sacks. We need to change that Saturday.
Special Teams we just need a stalemate. #84 is a superior KO return guy. If we cannot kick it thru the endzone, I'd rather kick it out of bounds and give it to them on the 35. We simply do not cover k.o.'s well.
Things are lining up in our favor. (1) we're home (2) UT's defense is nowhere near as good as LSU's or Fla's (3) we ought to be PO'ed about how we've played in marquee gmes the past 2 weeks and come out on fire (4) nobody likes a noon kickoff but the raod team is the most affected by it (5) Alabama put a serious physical beatdown on UT. All those things will work against UT and for us.
