Spurrier is to Steele as Petrino is to EJ

  • Makes me feel better about this weekend. In the 2 years Steele has been at Clemson, his defense has had no answer for USC's offense...allowing us in both years to put up one of our better performances of the season. We've been able to pretty much run or throw it at will, and the true spread option with a running QB is not one of Steele's strengths.

Wild card is how EJ will do against Morris...but EJ has been pretty good against the type of offense Clemson is going to run, really only struggling a little against teams who can run it effectively (Auburn, UF). And we all know Clemson can't run. Win the LOS and have the DL get to Tajh, and take away Allen with Allen and we should come away happy.

  • Do you think Petrino circles our game on his calendar every year because EJ jumped ship after 3 weeks of being the Arkansas DC to come to Carolina?

If so, hes done a pretty successful job of making him look bad the last few years as much as i hate to say it.

Had never thought of that and thought it was interesting.

  • I actually think we played yall well on defense last year. We gave up pick 6, and bad snap on punt gave up 1st and goal.

As for your analogy...EJ stops some people...actually most. We can't stop anyone.

Rewatched the game last night and I agree partially. Steele loaded the box and pretty much made the running game non-existent. However, he didn't account for Alshon and he had a monster game. To be fair I think it was a good gameplan, but he simply didn't have the personal to cover AJ 1 v 1 like you have to do in order to load the box. Luckily for us Garcia had one of his best games and our defense was suffocating which was the reason for the score.

You definitely played better than the year before, but we also pretty much had our way with the pass. Steele did a good job of taking away the run, but it left you vulnerable to the pass. I think we could have scored a bunch more than we did, but when it was obvious that you couldn't do anything against our defense there was no point in taking risks. But it's a valid point - last year was better than the year before as far as stopping the run and overall.

Clemson last year also had one of the best front 4s in the nation, and they could stop the run without completely loading the box. This year that's not the case. Thompson is as good as anyone and he'll make some plays, but the DL is worse and LB is still average. I don't expect miracles from our offense but if we can run the ball (and we should) then we can possess it and play some keep away. Have to obviously also avoid turnovers and dumb mistakes that sometimes we are prone to.

Hadn't thought of that, but I don't think a coach really tries harder one week vs another. I think Petrino just has our number and can always create mismatches because we've never had very good speed at LB and safety. When you don't have that and you can't pressure the QB with your front 4, then you aren't going to do very well stopping Arky.

Most taters were just happy that Lattimore didn't go for 300 on them.

  • If Spurrier didn't call off the dogs in the 2nd half we could have scored 40. I don't think we threw a pass after midway through the 3rd quarter despite the fact that we knew yall were loading up to stop the run. If you go back and look Alshon had all the yards, but we had guys running free in the secondary all night long.

Spurrier doesn't trust his QB's not to make mistakes so he has really taken a conservative approach when he gets a 2 score lead in games. Damn shame as I would have loved to have really put it on Clemson last year.

Once we got up we barely attempted a pass. We just sat on the lead because your offense couldn't do squat. Had we needed to I imagine we would have kept passing. Edit- looked it up. We ran the ball 16 times to 4 passes after going up 29-7 and attempted only 1 pass in the 4th.
