Spurriers comment about bama beating an NFL team

  • has to infuriate Saban given the lengths he goes to humble his players. Considering its Bama LSU week, anyone think this was a calculated move to get under sabans skin?

  • No. Spurrier isn't the first person to say that. I don't know why it would get under his skin this time

  • idk, spurrier is smart enough to know that no college football team could ever compete with an NFL team... hence vegas saying the smallest the line would get is 4 touchdowns. so why say that? you dont think it gets under sabans skin especially how saban flipped out on reporters for painting bama as unbeatable?

  • Yeah, he was obviously joking. The worst NFL team would crush bama. I hear people say things like that sometimes and I tell them to consider that in the NFL you have a team of all-conference and all-american college players that are grown men. Some of the college players are 18-19 years old. No comparison.

  • But you have to wonder...would the worst Pro Football Team accept a challenge from the best College Football Team?

I'm betting they wouldn't. If they lost, the embarrassment would be too much to handle.

  • No, he says what he really thinks for the most part. If somebody doesn't realize that by now, then they're intellectually lazy. He's probably not too far off the mark. The NFL players are not all conference and all american, some are from small schools and some only start one or two seasons of college for one reason or another.

Yeah but if they play in the NFL why would it matter what college they attended? They play pro football.

There are guys that are all conference and all american that suck in the NFL.

  • I had this conversation today at lunch. The best college team might have 20 future pro players at most. That's kids between 18 and 22. That team, with 60 players who will NEVER play in the NFL, would have to play a team with 53 NFL players. Of the 20 future pro players 8, at a minimum, are special teamers. That leaves 12 kids, divided between offense and defense, to defend or attack a pro defense or offense. Imagine, for instance, the Chiefs' line against Alabama. Those grown men would dominate Alabama's D Line and would never have to throw the ball to score. To score on a pro team you would have to trick them with an Oregon style offense. Even then, I think 5 or 6 good corners would cover the offensive players and the front 7 would control the game.

  • I just think Spurrier was complimenting Bama on how good their team is. I think it is as simple as that. Spurrier has respect for Saban. He probably thinks he needs to lighten up, and has taken the easiest paths to national titles one could possibly take. It is hard to imagine, but winning a title at Bama would not be a big deal to Spurrier. He thinks that just makes you about average for a Bama coach, and he has a point.

5thHorseman is exactly right, imo. Even the most talented college team would be at best a practice squad in the NFL.

As a poster correctly stated above, the worst NFL team would annihilate the best team in college football, and could do so playing second teamers. No - they wouldn't sidestep the challenge!

I'd take Bama +28 against the Panthers in the Georgia Dome. Ron Rivera hasn't been fired yet, right?

  • I think Dan Patrick took it a step further and even asked an oddsmaker (I can't remember who it was) what the line on a game like that would be. He used Jacksonville as an example. The oddsmaker told him they'd be favored by over 3 TD's.

i think he was poking saban a little bit. Everyone knows how saban got when the beat writers down there were writing how good they were, he flipped!!! So imagine how he feels knowing his players are hearing coaches saying they could beat an NFL team. I know it gets unders sabans skin big time!
Dan Patrick just brought it up and he thinks spurrier had motive behind it too...
