Starting to think Lattimore might need to stay his SR year

  • Just to prove he's not too injury prone for an NFL team to pick in Round 1.

    SCarcock

  • I don't think he'll be a top 3 round pick if he goes out this year. He's not the same back he was last year. Doesn't mean he's not good or even great, but there's no debating his not the back he was prior to injury. Still good, but not the best in America.

  • I know you get a thrill out of downvotes...and love to bring up controversial topics.
But I agree 100% with this one. I've been thinking the same thing this week.

I think coming back for his senior year will do wonders for his draft. Let's be honest, he is still not quite 100%. He is getting better each week. But still not back to his old form. And he has had his share of bad circumstances when it comes to injuries. I think he is probably a 3rd round pick right now.

If he comes back, he will set records that will never be broken at Carolina.

Agree with all that but he is developing a rep as a guy that can't stay healthy and he needs to fix that. RBs in the NFL are worthless when on the shelf.

  • I think you guys are being slightly selfish and want him back next year, he will be a 1st rounder without a doubt

And I think you're a homer for thinking that. RB just aren't as valuable anymore. He's not clearly a 1st rounder at this point.

Agree Steve. I'm not sure he "needs" to stay but I think he stays too. For a variety of reasons. He's just a very original and great young man who I believe also wants to get his degree before he leaves.

  • Not in agreeance at all with this post.

I've always hated the term "injury prone" because it gets thrown so much that it doesn't really mean anything anymore.

I can see if a player was missing time for various "pulls", "strains", or "tweaks". But Marcus has missed a game and a half for a sprained ankle and half a season for a TORN ACL. That's not "injury prone". That's football.

Truth is, a lot of people around this program will want him to stay for selfish reasons...not so that he can "improve his draft stock and show that he's not injury prone".

RB's have a short shelf life. The league knows what they are getting with Marcus and the knee has not been an issue this year.

The Lions drafted Ryan Broyles, who was only 5 months removed from his ACL surgery, in the second round. Marcus will be a first rounder and, the only thing that is left to be determined, is how much he can raise his stock at the combine.

Pittsburgh, San Francisco, New England, Atlanta, Washington, New Orleans, or Green Bay would love for him to slide their way.

  • He is still averaging 4.5 a pop. His yards are down, but so are his carries.

We haven't needed him in the fourth (when he flourishes) but in two games this year.

  • I have always thought Latt would stick around four years since the day he put his foot on campus. He's the epitome of class and decorum and his education has obviously been important to him along with some team goals. Make no mistake...this is HIS team.

First round money is a ton but he and his family have higher goals...Barkely, Luck, etc have proved it can be worth the risk.

That's not selfish...that's just my opinion.

  • I agree that ML needs to stay to prove his value.........but also, we will have a much better offensive line and offense in general. Marcus came in about 2 years ahead of his linemen and he would really get the benefit he deserves by running in next year's offense.

  • Even coming off of knee surgery, Marcus is the concensus #1 running back in the country. The announcers know it. Kiper knows it. And Spurrier knows it.

There is nothing left to prove. He has shredded Florida multiple times, Georgia multiple times, and Tennessee multiple times.

He's running behind a middle-of-the-road line right now, coming off of surgery, and he is still putting up respectable numbers.

If he were running behind Bama's line, we'd be talking about Heisman front-runner right now.

He's gone folks and he needs to go. He's done his part for the Univ. of South Carolina, now it's time for his rehab and hardwork to pay-off financially.

  • He will without a doubt be a 1st round pick. I think most analysts have him going 15-20. He has proven everything he needs to prove and he has too many positive intangibles to not go in the 1st round.

Selfishly, I would love to see him come back next year. Our OL, WR's, and QB's will all be better next year. Our defense will still be top notch. We will have a great shot at a SECC/NC with him next year (probably a decent shot without him). But, RB's normally have a short lifespan in the NFL and in the end, the injury last year may be one of the main reasons he decides to opt for the NFL.

  • He's listed as the #1 back in the draft by all the analysts and draft 'experts'. He's a mid-first rounder right now.

I think that he will come back, but he does not "need to prove" anything to the NFL. They are sold on him. He catches the ball, he is a great runner, and will be the most popular guy on their team. He also pass protects, does all the little things.

  • Mark Ingram won the heisman and was the unquestioned #1 RB in the country and the Saints traded back into the first round to get him. DL, OT, and corners are the most "draftable" positions. RBs are needed and used less and less. He might be the #1 RBbut that doesn't guarantee he's 1st round pick.

  • He isnt going to be a combine hero, although I am not sure why coming back will help Marcus. I think he goes 2nd round. NFL teams just do not draft RBs in the first half of the first round much.

  • LOL at a 3rd round pick. He'll be the top RB in the draft this year.

  • Anybody that want's him to come back doesn't want what's best for Lattimore. He's not going to improve his draft stock anymore than it is now. Extra year just means more wear and tear on his body. There are two positions where coming back does not do you any favors

    Cornerback, Running Back

He's going to be injury prone; and he's not going to get rid of that label here at South Carolina. SOS just relies on him too much and there are limitations to how much a body can take. We are set anyways, We have Wilds, Davis, Williams (if we get him), Carson, Smith. I really like our RB's for the future. Plus we have a number of guys we lead for in 2014. There's no need for him to comeback, we'll be a good team without him.

    Zethisis

  • I just hope whatever decision he makes turns out to be the right one, and yields an absolute truckload of money for him. We've been blessed to have him.

    Jefe5235

  • I agree. I think he can & will be the RB he was again... But I don't think even he realized how long it would take to FULLY recover from this particular injury which really couldn't have been worse. He's also a smart kid & I don't see him rolling the dice. Unless he just goes off from this week thru... I believe he will come back. Their are plenty of incentives aside from the probability of drastically improving his stock IMO.

We will be returning almost everyone on Offense, particularly the O- Line. Johnson will hurt but we should have a lot of depth next yr also a gelling O-Line after a yr.
Conner will be returning as a Sr, It will be Clowneys last yr too. With our schedule next yr, we really have a chance to win the conference & compete for the natty. With UF, CU & Miss St coming to WB.... I believe we'll be favored in every game w/ a legit chance to go undefeated. I also think Lattimorecreally wants to get that ring w/ Spurrier b/f he leaves & we may get it this yr just sayin.

We will lose all the LB's & DJ & Devin, but we've got some really talented freshmen LB's & 3 good ones coming in. Our secondary should be really stout next yr w/ a ton of depth. I believe our D-Line will be even better than this yr b/c of depth @ DT, apromising Chaz Sutton as a Sr opposite Clowney, w/ Alfy Hill coming in along w/ stud freshman Darius English. I think our DT's will be great.

I think Offensively we'll be 1 of if not best in country w/ all playmakers coming back, depth at every position led by Sr's Shaw, Lattimore & Sanders. Also, by then Adams, Roland, Davis & K Smith will be ready & know the Offense. I still have big hopes for '12 but knowing what we're returning against that schedule.... You have to be excited. Lattimore could have a Heisman type yr & he & Davis could be the best 1-2 punch in the country
