It was a much different situation. Rick wanted 500,000 + multiple year and that isn't feasible for a position coach.

    Special teams coordinator.

    Spurrier...I appreciate him plenty

Why? What has he shown that makes anyone believe he is capable of being a top of the line DC? Not just a top DC but one that is capable of doing the job all on his own without the head coach being involved on the side of the ball. Ward will be a huge mistake and set us back several years. IMO

its a good thing that you're an idiot, then.

Not feasible for a RB/TE/special teams coordinator. Only positions worth what he wanted would be OC / DC.

I was the one who said he had interest. Rick would like a shot at being the HC here and if he could be the OC that would be his only shot. Spurrier has moved the position past us hiring an in experienced head coach for our next go round. More than likely the next head coach will be a successful head coach somewhere unless it is Mangus or JR off of this staff.

Mangus needs to get passed the extraneous crap and he could be the guy. It remains to be seen if taking a leak and perception about SAM crap (that is completely bogus as far as he is concerned) will have any bearing. I personally think at the right time he could be one heck of a coach for us. I think either Mangus or JR will call the offense entirely in a year or two and that will be their big chance to try to win the job.

I see you couldn't come up with anything he has done either. Let me know when you come up with something.

I love the argument from silence that Ward will be a colossal failure. No one knows if he will be a good DC, nor does anyone know he won't be. Would naming Ward be a gamble? Yes. Would it set the program on a trajectory backwards? There is no way for anyone to know this with any certainty.

Not hiring Stoops b/c he might jump ship after 1-2 years makes sense to me. I don't blame Spurrier for not wanting to have to hire another guy in 1-2 years.

I did not say Ward would be a colossal failure. What I said was he would set the program back to the Tyrone Nix days. I think you give hive 2-3 years he will be fine to have complete control of a SEC program as a DC. We do not have 2-3 years to wait.

You hire the best guy you can hire no matter how long he may stay for the same reason you do not hire someone to be a coach in waiting. You never know who will be available when and if that person leaves, you might even get someone better. IE Holtz, Spurrier.

You hire the best guy available as long as he is a fit for your program. Always! I am not saying that guy is Stoops, Spurrier will make that choice but I am saying Ward is not at the top of anyone's list and we should not settle either.

  • Assuming the OP is correct, I think this is a wise decision on Spurrier's part. Even if Stoops came in and did great next year, he would almost assuredly be gone the next year. Don't you think recruits are smart enough to figure that out? If they're not, our competition will enlighten them. That would mean we would have 3 different DC's in 3 years. How's that a good plan? Wil Muschamp is a good example of what would probably occur here. He hired Charlie Weiss for OC and now after 1 year he looking again. That's no way to build a sustainable program.

  • If Spurrier promotes Ward, I take that as an indication that he thinks Ward can do the job. I certainly value his opinion more then anyone on any of these boards. It also keeps continuity in the program and in recruiting.

I agree with Tony Morrell in that I don't think Mangus gets the shot at H.C. here. The arrest incident as well as the SAMS thing (his fault or not-tainted w/the brush) pretty much puts that possibility to bed. Besides, I don't see it happening anyway. A division-winning/competing SEC school now is seen as an apex job for a H.C. in terms of $$ as well as prestige. No reason to try to promote within for stability, etc.-you do go for the "Homerun Hire" for Head Coach. The only way you would lose him is if an Alabama or LSU offered an insane amount that we couldn't match & that means he did a heluva job while here!

Bold strategy. Did he not know EJ wanted to be a HC as well?

EJ said USC would be his last stop.

I agree, we had a miserable secondary for 2 yrs. prior to this yr. when our d line helped the secondary, remember Ky. and Arkansas.

I never said anything about Stoops at all, What I want is the best guy available that will take the job. I am not sure who that is but I feel pretty sure their are better options than Ward.

What amazes me is that some of you think Ward will be great just because he is a Gamecock and you think he will get the job. So automaticly he will be great because he is in the family. I just say it is sad if that is the best we can do.

I would like to know your qualifications to choose any coach? IMO none of us know how coach Ward or Stoops or anyone else would do as head of the defense but it is not our responsibility to choose one. It is Spurier's and his alone unless he ask someone for advise in making a decision. I will support his choice no matter who it is.. I mean no offense to you but I get tired of so many posters trashing somebody when they really don't have a clue. I am no expert either but I have coached high school football, officiated high school football and played high school football in my life and I don't pretend to know who Spurier should hire for any position. Let the HBC do his job and support his choice.
