Suggestions needed....

  • This June I will be retiring from the military. Over the years I feel like I have missed too much time out of my son's life. Due to deployments etc., I missed out on many of the "cool" moments in my sons first 12 years. I also feel that this missed time has not left us as close to each other as I wished we were. With time running low on the opportunities to bring us close together before the high school and college (Girl) years hit, I have come up with a plan.
    I have decided that this fall my son and I will take on a massive undertaking of college football road trips as a bonding opportunity. Ordinarily, I would want to stick to just taking in the Gamecocks home and away games. However, I feel like going to other towns and cities will allow us much more opportunity to bond as well as broadening his horizons and life experiences.
    My only problem is I am completely at a loss of which games we should attend and would like some help in coming to a decision.
    when it comes to criteria there really is not that much to stand in the way. While choosing a game you feel we should attend, I would like to take into account,
    1. History of the school or game
    2. Opportunities for stop offs (must see's along the trip)
    3. History or other items of interest in the immediate area of the school.

    Feel free to include any other notes that you feel would add to the trip for a certain game.
    The only other team my son has seen play @ home other than Carolina is Texas while we were living in San Antonio.
    This should not place Texas out of the running, however having already seen them in action will drop them below an equally rated trip.

    Oh, not that anyone would care, however I will make a post game post from each stop rating the experience from a family standpoint. Thanks again.

    Kudos to you for recognizing and trying to rectify the "parenting gap" created by career. I will tell you that what will matter the most to your son is the time spent with you. Having said that, if I were taking a child to one college football game that could teach them about a lot of things, it would be Army/Navy.

I don't have extensive experience for away games, so I can't give you any worthwhile advice on that. I just wanted to thank you, and wish you well.

  • OP, I applaud your efforts, and thank you for your service.

    Just food for thought; you must ask yourself, would my son enjoy this road trip as much as I would myself? If so, great, but if not, it would be prudent to determine what your child would enjoy more. You might find that your son has always dreamed about going to Disney world, or has always wanted to learn how to hunt and fish. I've found that it is always best to participate in sustainable activities when building relationships. Activities that you share mutual interest in that can be sustained long-term not only allows you the opportunity to teach, it gives you the opportunity to learn.

  • A couple off the top of my head:

    UT/OKLA in Dallas. West End atmosphere, Jerry World, State Fair of Texas (great fun for all ages)....and who knows, maybe a NHL, NFL or NBA game in town Sunday.

    U of Washington home game. Great setting, great town to visit (Seattle), great surrounding area.

    Agree with this. Army Navy would be an awesome game to go to.

  • I had a blast at Notre Dame. Beautiful campus. I've been on campus at Michigan and Ohio State and both stadiums are very nice. I'd avoid ACC NC State, UNC, and Wake are weak.

    If he likes baseball go to Fenway and Milwaukee. Both awesome trips.

    SEC stadiums LSU, Florida, and Athens are a blast. Hostile environments.

  • Agree that ND is a good place to visit. Nice campus, good game atmosphere. Not a bad drive from Chicago.

  • I'd try some of the local D2 games too. (Not Clemson) Newberry, PC, Wofford. Fun games to go too,

  • Fly in to Denver. Rent a car. Catch the Colorado State vs. CU game. Drive south down hwy 285 in to New Mexico catch a game here in Albuquerque.

    I understand neither of those games are premier "must see" games. The reason I suggest it is that Colorado and New Mexico in the fall are GLORIOUS. The weather will be perfect. The drive down 285 will be breathtaking. Plenty of spots to fish, camp, hike...etc. Mesa Verde and Chaco Canyon are an easy drive from Albuquerque if you like historical parks.

    This CU and CSU's areas are breathtaking. Utah State has an awesome view from their stadiums also.
