Bittersweet it is but truthfully Ray is the man for the job. He loves Carolina and will do an excellent job IMO. Holbrook will be a great baseball coach and would have probably left soon unless he got the HC position. Ray did not want to coach much longer and if he had retired and Holbrook had already left then the baseball program would have taken a serious hit.

Whittle, what is Pastides' justification for not interviewing any other candidates? Why is everyone (from Pastides, to the board, to other coaches at USC) so sure that a tremendous baseball coach will automatically make a tremendous AD? Would it not be far more logical to have Tanner be the #2 man behind an experienced older AD for a few years, then take the top post a little further down the road?
Hopefully it will prove to a good decision, but I fail to see how this helps us overall -- as I see it, we'd be best served with Tanner remaining as coach (his best talent) while we bring in an excellent, experienced AD who will work well with all of our coaches and supporters.

I'm more sad than happy.
Tanner was the best coach we've ever had, and we just lost him in the prime of his career. Just when he turned us into a true dynasty, he leaves. Holbrook is a fine assistant, but he's unproven as a head coach, just as Tanner is unproven as an AD.
Here's to hoping for the best.

Coach Tanner has never been willing to surround himself with anything less than great people. That will continue and we will all be better off as Gamecocks for this decision.
