The difference between Thompson & Shaw?

  • Is spurrier. He calls plays more effectively and more players are in the flow of the offense (when thompson is in). But you have to look at games like mizzou where shaw was healthy and was damn near perfect.

The difference ain't the player per se. It's the coach. The Hbc when he runs zone read runs the offense by committee. When Dylan is in there it's simply fun and gun.

  • Maybe, but I suspect some of those same plays are called for Shaw when he hesitates to throw and takes off running. Just a guess on my part.

  • Disagree.
Thompson lets it go on the plays that are called.
    Shaw doesn't.

Absolutely right. Spurrier knows how to call a game. I never agree with people complaining about play calling. Shaw has struggled executing the called passing plays since he's been here. He's been very successful, but he's not the best pure passer in the world, and either doesn't read defenses well, or doesn't trust what he sees often.

As much as I would like to see Shaw let that ball fly, it's hard to argue with a 16-3 record. He isn't turning the ball over, which has been a huge key to our winning. In many of the losses in the Spurrier era, we've had 3-4 turnovers per game. I'll take the 16-3 record with few turnovers.

My thoughts too. The good news is that he can run.

  • Like always, the back up QB is always the fans most popular player on the team. I like Dylan and he definitely deserves his due but Shaw has proven himself against the creme of the crop in the SEC and his overall record speaks for itself. When both 100% healthy, ill take Shaws combo of running and throwing against a top notch SEC defense. This is by no means a knock on DT. Shaw just gives us more play calling options with this added dimension.

Disagree, the problem is Shaw rarely runs the passing plays the way they are called. He hesitates to get rid of the ball. I would wager that on about 40% of passing plays, Shaw does not throw the ball.

Dylan is much better at reading what the defense gives him and getting rid of the ball, which is how Spurrier's offense is meant to be run. It just looks like SOS is doing a better job though that is not based on anything but perception.

At the end of the day it can be summed up like this. Dylan Thompson is a Spurrier-esque QB. He listens to the coaches and runs the plays the way they are designed. Shaw on the other hand, is very hesitant to throw the ball and does not read the field well. This leads to the perception that Spurrier is not calling the plays well. Dylan is more a system QB, while Shaw is more of a backyard football guy.

I like both and love the "problem" we have. But in all honesty, I think Thompson should be the #1 guy because of his ability to pass the ball. In games where we need to run the ball more, Shaw should play more(or in game where we are leading, Shaw should play more as we would be running the clock down as much as possible). I doubt Spurrier will do this though, Shaw was the #1 guy and it's hard to bench him b/c of injury. But Dylan will play and I will wager he will play well.

Agreed. What troubles me is that Shaw can do just about everything Dylan can(Dylan has the better arm), but just doesn't seem to have "it" when it comes to the passing game. Not sure what "it" is, but Dylan has it and Shaw doesn't.

Completely disagree. Shaw played hurt all year. Remember Clemson 2011 or even Mizzou last year? I am not sure what you are referring to as "it" but Shaw WINS. That's all the "it" we need. Shaw is proven. As good as Dylan has been, he has too small a sample size to say he has that much more skill then Connor. I will say that Dylan does get rid of the ball quicker and seems a lot more decisive with his throws, but I would like to see him do that against a top notch D before I say he is an overall better passer than Shaw. He'll get his chances.

  • deadhorse but I'll bite. Dylan isn't scared to throw ball, not saying shaw is but its either that or he doesn't trust him arm enough. He can't throw people open because of it too. I like the guy but he pisses me off alot during games, but the guy is a winner gotta give him that.

Well I was referring to the "it" in the PASSING GAME, as I clearly put in my post. Shaw doesnt have it. Just look at how the passing game clicks when Dylan is in versus when Shaw is in. Dylan throws the balls on passing plays. Shaw doesn't about 40% of the time(just my best estimate).

We have won mostly because of our awesome defense and ball control. Shaw does not turn it over often, but for the most part does not win games either. He reminds of Phil Petty in regards to the passing game(definitely not when it comes to running). Phil was good at not screwing up, but Phil also didn't win us many games.

We lost two road games last year, in the LSU I have to blame Shaw for that awful pick he threw when we were leading. Absolutely his worst play of the season IMO. In the Florida game, he fumbles on the first series because he cannot see an OBVIOUS blitz coming from his strong side? How is that possible that a QB does not see that read and do something about it? Everyone in the stadium saw that except Shaw. He has poor vision and does not read defenses well. Dylan is better in both aspects IMO.

Shaw has won a lot. Shaw also has reached his ceiling. He has played for 3 seasons now, with last year being "his" team. By the end of the year, he was still making the same mistakes over and over again. His injuries also have nothing to do with his inability to see the field or let the ball go.

Dylan won the Outback bowl for us with his better passing skills. I'd bet money Shaw would not have thrown the ball to Bruce that scored the go ahead TD. Shaw does deserve credit too, he played very well.

I think they both need to play, and they will because Spurrier said so. My opinion is that Shaw should play when running the ball more is the game plan, and Dylan when we need to pass the ball. Who would you rather have in the two minute drill, Shaw or Thompson? For me it is a no brainer.
